I agree with Janet...home remedies are mostly ineffective

I'm with Janet, too! We've had up to four cats at one time and Natures Miracle is the absolute best. It contains enzymes that break down the smell and the stain. We've actually used it more for cleaning up when one of our dogs decides to share via projection something they've eaten outside! The best thing is that it can be purchased in so many different sizes depending upon your needs. We keep the gallon one with attached sprayer close by in a closet for those unexpected projections. :)

Baking soda and white vinegar mix to a paste and leave on for 10-15 minutes then wash as normal. For carpet or rug , soak up as much as possible with kitchen roll then pour baking soda and leave overnight. In the morning all the urine and smell will have been soaked up by the baking soda. Vacuum up. Worked brilliantly for me! I'm in UK and can't find any commercial product that works 😔

Nature's Miracle works well on dog urine; Cat Odor Off works much better on cat urine!
