You have a couple of "themes" going on so maybe pinning one of them down would help you. Say for instance you chose the French farm house look because of the table and bench. Paint your chairs a creamy white to match the legs of the table and get rid of some of the "brown-ness" in the room. This might be a good thing to do on the buffet as well, and that would unite the two different styles. The lines on the buffet are beautiful with that bottom area and feet. You could do French stencil in the middle of the buffet top-I've seen some great ones for short money. You could get by with the chandelier if you redo the chairs and buffet as it looks like it could tie in once that's done. I'd keep the curtains simple. Maybe something in a cream linen like material with a simple band of color(it could even be black) sewn on the edge where the two panels meet in the center. Lastly an area rug to tie it all together, some red flowers in a big cream pitcher/bowl on the table and you're done. Of course, just ideas, but I would steer clear of heavy drapery treatments. Not enough window to handle the weight of the look.

Honestly, I would clear out everything from the room and start all over again, save the bench. Table, chairs and buffet are not nice or of more than Goodwill value and it all does not go together with anything. Paint your room satin white cream or soft yellow, strip and redo the wood floors. If you must save the furniture. take it all out back and spray paint it all one solid gloss or satin color, even black would do. If you can't redo the floors, same thing, paint it one solid color or paint on a pattern then seal coat it with a polysatin. Sheer white curtains and 'uplighting' floor lamps or light pots.

Definitely decide on a theme. I really like the bench and poster as a starting point. Since you only asked about lighting and windows, I will save the rest of my comments on furniture except to say that as is, the room is very dark and "heavy." Once you tackle that you will see the need for light airy window treatments. Simple lines, white or off white linen or lace (although I personally don't like the idea of lace, but you might.) It is difficult to ascertain the size of your room, but I would consider rustic ironwork for your chandelier. Again, if you can find simple lines with a touch of ornate that might be perfect. Think about your Fleur-de-lis when picturing the lines of the light. As mentioned above, dots of up-lighting for dramatic focus could work if used sparingly. I would play with the idea of putting the bench in front of the window, perhaps moving the sideboard to where the bench once was and maybe turning the table the other direction if there is room. Again, it will depend on the dimensions of the table and the room. Good luck. Several of the other comments to your question are very good. Pick what works for you!

I love your "goodwill" furniture and think you have done a fantastic job so far. I agree with Lindy's suggestions. As I visualize her concept, I think it's beautiful! I love French Country also, and think you are well on your way to a French dining room. If you need help finding the right window treatment, Google whatever type you are looking for. You'll find tons of examples. You've done a great job, Be proud if it!!

Forget about John, Rebecca, not worth thinking about. One thing you have to keep in mind is what YOU like. You're the one living there and you have to enjoy being in your house. Lindy did give some good advice, but you don't have to do any of if it's not you, or you can do a little at a time. I really like the idea of a white vase with big red flowers on the table. If you have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels near you you can find them fairly cheaply. I know how you feel. I have an old 70s triple dresser that I am using as storage and I want to paint it, but am stuck on which color! Believe in yourself, Rebecca!

With your table is nothing wrong, it needs just a bit more on it : see photo 1 Then for your dressoir, I would put more white things on it like plates and so on, also, change the lamp (see photo 2) I would buy a copper paint and do your handles on the dressoir and here and there a line on the sides and on the those legs. A copper that's very shiny. I would do the same on your lighting fixture. and last, but not least, or buy another mirror or change the "frame", see picture 4. Those suggestions are maybe not your choise at all, bur maybe we come closer to the "feel" you want.

No charge ;-) Pamlillymartin@hotmail.com My products are usually shipped FREE AS WELL ;-)) If you prefer to go a different route I would look at some of the goodwill stores at chandeliers and spray paint them. They turn out very pretty and then you can use the round LED lighting with lumens to make sure you have the same amount of wattage. Those bulbs can be found at Lowes and they help keep your electric bill down as well as give a whole new look to a chandelier instead of the usual chandelier bulb

Love the table. (Similar to mine from the 1930s.) The bench and poster look good together but maybe a bit too dark for the rest of your furnishings? (I'd use the cushion that's a British flag somewhere else if you're going for French country. lol) You can unify with colour - and I think it is the navy - very Frenchy - in your curtains, lamp shade. Think your other pic needs a frame so it doesn't look so contemporary. Chandelier - I'd go with a simple design - maybe in creamy white or black - that has 5 lights with the small shades. You can pick one up at a Thrift, spray paint it, and just buy the shades. Like your curtains, but I'd use them as side drapes tied back with navy ties, and use white sheers under for the light, airy look. Like your navy lamp shade. Add a runner and some interesting stuff, some with a touch of blue/navy on the table as suggested above. I'm also a great believer in using tall potted plants, real or artificial, to soften corners, etc. An area rug would cozy things up - one with some navy in it. (Love Thrifts. Have acquired some amazing things - almost newly upholstered furniture or antiques, signed prints, rugs, mohair throws, fine dishes, etc., etc. Why pay retail? I check frequently and just wait until I find something that will "fit", and that I could use/need/want.)

You have some wonderful ideas. I like what you said about adding white sheers to the curtains. Do I need another curtain rod for the sheers or add to existing rod?

Are you able to email me pictures of 1.the four walls of your room and a general pic of the middle of room. Add height of ceiling and dimensions of window ..... 2. Pictures of rooms adjoining to this room you are decorating. FYI... So many choices of both. Don't get discouraged. Be willing to think outside the box 😉

Hi Rebecca-I just saw the post above the chandelier-totally missed it, sorry. Shame on the too good for the modest home decorator! If you are able to pay the rates then she should be able to fulfill the requirements you pay her for. Anyway, back to you and the room. The buffet is beautiful, but dark. Don't get rid of it, but try to find out if it's worth anything because of age/maker, etc. If it's just old, think about painting it cream as well. Stand back and look at your room-do the walls and table decor look like soldiers marching around the room? Clock her, picture there, mirror there? Think about grouping in odd numbers (3 items rather than 2 items together) rather than marching. If you want to go with black as one of your colors (like the bench) either make or buy simple linen like drapes for the window and pull them back to the edge to let in the light. Get rid of the glass bottle on the table; it's not helping at all. Think pitchers and large bowls together, a different shade for the small lamp on the buffet ...something with red to bring in the color off the painting and sign maybe? A nice arrangement of flowers on the table-keep it simple and a creamy table runner. Maybe hang the clock and the French signage above the buffet together-I would think about getting rid of the mirror just to see if it really was necessary. Every wall doesn't need to be filled. Also the British flag pillows are a whole 'nother country so either recover or repurpose elsewhere. OK, that's it for me and it's only 8 AM. Other suggestion is to look at what Johanna Gaines does on Fixer Upper and go country-she has great ideas for some interesting items. Wish you lived by me-I'd have great fun spending your money and wouldn't charge you a dime LOL!

OUUUU! I see there is an offer from Pam Martin in AR for free help! I love Hometalkers--always willing to help and what a generous offer this one is. I don't know/can't tell the dimensions of the poster/picture/buffet, but play with the 2 largest items and maybe the picture will look best with the poster going on the large wall where the picture now hangs. TThere is a picture of a light fixture at the end of Pamela Martins post. This is similar to the one I just ordered and it is an awesome choice for your room as well. Looks like you have a lot of help rolling in! Good luck and send us all finished pix so we can see how awesome it turns out!
