I need ideas on how to fill in a 6x3 foot opening in kitchen ceiling

I have removed the florescent lighting in the recessed opening. It is recessed approx. 8 inches. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. The ceiling is only 8 feet, so this limits solutions somewhat! Paula

I would leave it as a coffered ceiling. Put some crown molding in the inside, paint as the ceiling. You could put in fake beams evenly spaced in the recess, painted as the ceiling.

I plan to do this over my large island. Fluorescents just don't work for me any longer. I plan to have the ceiling rewired for pot lights and then sheetrock it and paint it.

Depending on your decor you could just use ceiling tiles on the entire ceiling and that would cover the hole. There are many different options from copper to tin to paintable tiles. Prices vary but for a small area I think it would be a good option.

Look at some pictures of coffered ceilings and see if yours is one that could be finished out to be a coffered one. There are several good pictures here on this site, and I imagine elsewhere. Sounds deep enough, just wondered if this could be an option for you. I know I'd love to have one, but don't have the depth to pull it off.

Canned lights in the recessed area or add a decorative trim around the edge leaving an edge to tuck up rope lighting on a dimmer switch. Nice appeal.

I would keep the recessed area & create either a trayed ceiling or coffered. I added pictures I found via google so you can see how wonderful they look! With the tray ceiling..... you can even position the crown molding to accommodate rope lighting ;-)

You can cover foam board with fabric to match your decor.and wedge it up there . Can lights are pretty standard or you can put some pretty grill work or even radiator grid ,painted or not depending on your style,

you will never match the area unless the whole ceiling is done again, so use the recess to add drama and change to the area if it is balanced it will work, wood trim, a stain glass insert, new lights many options if you allow for possibilities and can vision ahead of the results

All of you are so smart and crafty! I had a small hole left after doing the replacement light thing. We used a Medallion. Those large ones are really expensive. Luckily I only had to use a smallish one

When I removed my fluorescent lights I was left with a 4' x 6' area like yours. I patched up some holes then painted the 'ceiling' part. I have some '3-step' 5" baseboard that I plan to line the sides with. Because my space is deep like yours, above the baseboard I will trim 1x's to fill in the extra space. Where the opening meets the actual ceiling I will put 'L' shaped trim to cover the ugly edge. I plan to install 4-foot-long LED light fixtures similar to this one from from IKEA http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20262581/

We used beadboard trimming with molding. Painted same color as rest of ceiling. Looks fabulous and easy peasy.

Thanks! I decided to put similar boards in mine. Now to find a person who will scrape the rest of the ceiling, as well as do the light job! No luck yet.
