I have difficulty with Asian lilies.

Please give me some advise. I have trouble growing Asian or oriental lilies. most of them are short and only a few develop buds and bloom with only one or two blooms. I have always thought that they have been killed by spring frost. But, this one group gets large full sized buds and when they fnally open there are no petals or stamins. See picture. What is wrong with them and what can I do to correct the problem?
These buds open slightly and they are empty and then they dry up.
There are no petals or bloom inside these buds.

I'll admit this one rather has me stumped, Carol Ann. Is it possible you are cutting the lilies down immediately after they flower (or don't flower, as the case may be), so that bulbs are not getting enough nutrition to produce the next year's flower?

Good suggestion Doug! Lilies, and other bulbs take up nutrients for energy for next years growth and blooms. Let them die down all the way then cut them off.

I don't think I was doing that but I will definitely let them completely die down before cutting them back. Do they need to be fed anything special?

I don't give mine anything special. With you living in PA I know your getting enough chill time. Not sure what else it could be. I use 10-10-10 on everything. :)

I have had trouble with some of my lilies while other are beautiful. It has been a very wet year in Maine this year, and all my lilies are beautiful, even the ones that have not boomed before. They may need more water.

an old timer told me,,,big blooms require more fertilizer and More often..... more vegs you want the more you fertilize too.. another hint for plants in general,,,, left over coffee don't dump it down the drain.....water outdoor plants with it.. especially acid loving plants..... not to mention the used coffee grounds are GREAT for stronger rose canes, and all other acid loving (rody, hydrangea, lilacs, azaleas, liliacs esp.) plants..don't know if this would help..don't cut the blooms down,, they are like ANY BULBS,, let wither and die then pull off the dried parts......BTW.....many HYBRID LILIES aren't designed to last for years,, over a few years they slowly shrink,,I gave up on asiatic lilies,,because they are not cheap for good quality bulbs and at 2-3 yrs beautiful, at 4-5 yrs still nice, aabout 6+ yrs,, smaller and smaller,,,after that they are at the end of their life cycle,, and look much like yours. If you dig them up I bet you will find the bulbs are MUCH smaller..

The coffee grounds also prevent snail and slug problems. They cannot go over the grounds.

I would like to thank everyone who shared information with me. I will be feeding and watering more and will definitely let the lilies die down before cutting them off. Wishing for the best next summer. Carol Ann

Looks like they have a lily fungus!! Use a antifungal on the plants and the ground surrounding them!!
