I painted my laminate wood cabinets last year and very happy. But it is time consuming, so be patient. I suggest you remove ALL the hardware, not just the handles, but also the hinges. A good primer is key. Only had to do minimal sanding because the guy at the paint store pointed me to a primer for shiny surfaces. Do two coats of primer, letting them dry at least 2-3 hours in between (another great time form the painter guy). Now time to choose the paint. Purchase quality paint that allows clean-up, wipe downs. Plan to paint at least 2 coats of paint over the primer, letting them dry at least 3-4 hours in between. Painted my upper cabinets a soft yellow and the lower cabinets a soft gray. Changed out all the hardware, to give a more updated appearance. Be patient, have fun, and experiment. Nothing is truly permenent, not when you can just repaint over the mistake.

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.....it's not "chalkboard" paint. It covers EVERYTHING...even laminate. I'm currently in the process of painting my kitchen cabs. No stripping. No sanding. This stuff is amazing. It's pricey, but a little goes a loooooong way. Google it and you can find a list of places near you that sell it.

You could prime your cabinets with a product called Gripper found at Lowes and then paint with the color and finish of your choice.
