I have gold bugs on my sweet potato vine, what are they?

I have a small metallic gold bug, eating holes in my sweet potato vine. They are about the size of a lady bug & their color seems to fade after I pluck them off.

It sounds like you may have encountered the golden tortoise beetle, Jill. They are particularly fond of sweet potato vines, but rarely do enough damage to warrant chemical intervention. See more here: http://entnemdept.ufl.edu/creatures/veg/potato/golden_tortoise_beetle.htm

Thank you Douglas Hunt, that is exactly what they are!! Glad to know they are not as intrusive as japanese beetles! I have only seen a few this year & will just pick them off & check for eggs.
