In my opinion, any lawn fertilizer is safe for use around dogs after it has been rained on or irrigated. Assuming you have plenty of sun, use any brand of turf fertilizer according to label instructions.

Do a soil test as well, Carol. In the northeast, lawns often benefit from an annual application of lime.

Also, get your lawn aerated every fall, with a core/plug type, not spikes. Makes a big difference. I have a 1/4 acre lot, costs $100 to have a lawn company come and do it.

You should wait until early fall to do a core aeration, Carol.

Carol, yes the core style aerator is key, do in the fall. Spike type really just poke holes, and squeeze the soil together even more tight.

Oh, also, Winterizer fertlizer also helps a great deal. Helps the roots grow further down in the soil during the winter, come summer, your lawn will thank you with a more drought tolerant lawn.
