Farmhouse Fun: Entryway Table in OFMP Pitch Black

One of my favorite parts about getting to participate in The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest each month is that it pushes me outside of my comfort zone. Trying products I’ve never heard of or experienced, and giving different techniques a go stretches me in a really good way. This month is no exception, as the sponsor is The Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co. and the theme is “Farmhouse Fun”.
I wanted a piece that was worthy of this paint, and found a drop-leaf entry table on the online auction site, Everything But the House. I loved the details on this piece, and knew it was the perfect candidate for a little Farmhouse Fun!
After channeling my inner Joanna Gaines, I gave the table a good scrub and then sanded with 100-grit sandpaper.

OFMP comes in powder form, so I mixed up the paint according to the directions on the package. It’s equal parts paint and water (I used warm water from the tap and had no issues). Once the paint was dissolved, I added in Extra Bond. This product helps the paint to adhere to surfaces that might not be perfectly bare wood. Even after sanding, my table had an odd coating to it, so I figured I’d better add this step just to be safe!
As I painted the table, I made sure to stir the paint every couple of minutes so that the Extra Bond wouldn’t settle to the bottom. (I was lazy and didn’t feel like walking to the basement for a paint stir stick, so I used a plastic spoon. Please don’t judge.) This paint went on great and I was amazed at how far a little bit of paint went. I gave it two coats just to be safe, but I’m pretty sure I could have gotten away with just one coat.
I distressed a bit with a sanding pad until I got the farmhouse look I was going for.
For only my second piece I’ve ever distressed, I kind of like it!
