Walnuts shell craft ideas?

Question

I have  these walnut shells.  I used them for plant pots decoration. I have so many of them I think to make some lamps similar to bamboo ones, but not sure about technique. Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you.

A little craft for the kiddos is to make mice. I made some for my fairy garden for my brave caries to ride to victory . You just make ears and a tail , glue them onto your half shell and dab on eyes and whiskers and you have a little mousie. I used Brown pleather for years and tail, paint for eyes, and pieces of an old broom for whiskers. The whole thing took about an hour to complete. Fun for my Granddaughter and I.

You could glue them to a ring and make a wreath with some small pine cones ,pecan shells, and almond shells. My Mom and I made these attaching them all to a cardboard ring and made Christmas presents this way.  Another use is for handles on mason jar lids. Just glue on.  I think the little mice is a cute idea too!

As the Artist i am, i would seperate shells into four lots, putting them in unwanted ice-cream or plastic containers. Purchase four different metal coloured spray paints, using dishwashing gloves that are long (to protect your paws/skin) spray & mix around with your hands to cover shells... Repeat with all.. From any Spot light store or craft shop, buy a variety of different shape eyes that you would put on toys; you might be lucky & get some stickers also, with 'whatever eyes' place a few on your biggest shells & place into little display baskets (small ones & leave them natural)... Ok coarse stick those eyes that are on a button foremat using a simple clear craft glue... Now you have very interesting table displays; 'eyes always watching for protection.. * this idea i have done & it does look quite amazing... You can mix your colour shells (always once properly dried before proceeding anything), & use small display dishes/baskets for it doen't look cramped or cheap by no means, the eyes make for that extra touch of fab look, that will get your guests talking,& wanting simply because they are so different... Break them into smaller pieces and cover them with water, soak them for 12 hours, then boil them for 2 hours to make a stain/dye.....the longer you boil them the darker the dye.  100% natural but the stain will last for 3-4 days on your skin if you don't wear gloves.  A friend's mom used to dye her hair with this in the old country....I have used it to dye some old white sheets a golden brown color.  2-3 cups walnut shells to 4 cups water.

Be an ecologist. Clean them inside; glue area with some color cloth or paper; paint little ornaments in the outside; place an earring cl and wallaaa! A nice pair of ecological earrings. Crazy, not?

Crush shells into very small pieces-they make great pet litter.  The smell is a bit like milk (as in dairy farm smell), and shells disintegrate into something similar to sawdust!

Lightly sand the outside of each shell, glue to your lamp base. Stain if you want, then use a sealer to bring out the color and 'grain' of the shells.

Go get a plywood circle already cut at Lowe's.  Get a mirror of any size.  Place the mirror in the center of the plywood & draw a circle around it.  Remove the mirror & paint the plywood to desired color.  Take shells outside & turn each one upside down onto some old newspapers & spray paint them a desired color.  When all is dry, hot glue the shells to the plywood on the outside of the circle you drew for the mirror.  Glue the mirror in place.  On the outer edge of the mirror & in between each shell, you could put some beads, pearls, mini glass drops, etc to accent it.  Screw a hanger on the back & you've got a decorative mirror for any room of your house.  :)  You could also ground them up in your food processor & use them as mulch for your flower beds or pots too (just on top of the soil for decoration).  :)

Paint the walnut shells old on the inside, cover the inside with glue and a glitter, then add a miniature santa, sled.,decorated tiny ree  Glue your color of ribbon for an ornaments or drill a small hole in the top to insert a tiny
screw eye to hold the ribbon.

If you want to do a lamp shade just get a plain one and glue the shells to it.   Maybe alternate the orientation of the shells or mix in other items to create interest.  I think mixing them with the glass gems from the dollar store would look cool. Good luck.

If you don't have an old lamp to cover with nut shells,  buy one that would be easy to work with at a thrift shop or yard sale.  Using air dry clay, maybe tan or brown, stick to lamp base, filling in all space with clay, allow to dry.   When dry, brush on a clear varnish to help keep the clay from flaking and to give the clay and shells a special finish.

I envision a nutty nut bowl. Glue shells onto a dollar store bowl. paint flat bottom of bowl, paint nutty faces onto attached shells. Use as a nut bowl or anything that needs a nutty theme. The size of the bowls are up to you, make a set. Have fun with the nut coating them. Important, seal the nut shells with food friendly sealant for cleanup  and hygiene.
