My sister purchased two kitchen carts at Ikea and had placed them side by side. However, placing larger items in there to store was bothersome. The legs kept getting in the way. So I told her I could make one larger cart that would be much more functional.
Here are the original carts
I started by removing the top portion of one leg on each cart. My thinking was that the top shelf would be more accessible and it would support the cart. I've never done anything like this before so I was cautious. Better safe than sorry.
Here they are side by side. The tops were cut to fit the new base. Once cut, I had to find a way to make the tops look like one. I tried wood filler to adhere the tops but live and learn. It didn't work. So I used drywall putty and once sanded, the result was exactly what I wanted.
The end result
I decided to cut the bottom portion of the legs as I had used hinges to tie the carts together. Once the mending plates were in place, (3 behind the middle back legs and under the shelves) the cart was ready to be painted and used. Now it's being used without frustration and is a nice piece that can also be used as extra prep space.
Suggested materials:
  • Mending plates, drywall putty and paint (left over)   (Home Depot)
