My closet is only 42" wide, 37" deep and 96" ceiling height. I need to maximize the space to accommodate clothes and shoes. Help!

For your smaller its and shoes use the plastic shoe boxes or baskets.Sort the clothes based on season ,what ever you are not using now store under your bed in containers or any possible room.
  • double hanging rod on one side with tall hanging on other side - put shoes on top & underneath. Consider switching out the door to a double door that opens out & install shoe organizer on backs There are numerous options - it is just how much of what do you have & what works best for you

Hang a wooden dowel (or a sawed off broom handle will do) from the regular closet rod. Will double the verticle space.

Keep it Simple Sweetie! The KISS idea. Empty your closet, donate things you have not used in a year, then get boxes for shoes, keep your wardrobe simple with mix and match items. I know this is jard, but it can be done.

Use the vertical space as much as you can. Use clear boxes with lids to store items not used regularly and label them so you don't forget what's in there. Use hooks on the doors if you can. You may want to raise the hanging bar so you can put drawers on the floor for storing folded clothes.

#1. Remove everything... purge what's not wanted/used #2. Get your self 4 closet brackets that look like the picture I attached.... and 2 closest rod dowels. Use those to create an upper & a lower clothes rods {you have now doubled your hanging space} PLUS you can add a shelf to the top of those brackets to utilize for other storage. {this is how hubby & I doubled our closet space! Top for him, lower for me} #3. Create a hanging space on remaining side wall space for shoes, scarves, ect. In the second/third pictures give a couple ideas for that ;-)

First and foremost...remove everything and purge. Use skirt hangers . One hanger holds 6 skirts. Use a circular belt holder. Invest in a shoe rack with cubbies to place on floor. Place it to one side of the closet and then hang the longer dresses together so they don't rest on the shoe rack. Or use the existing grey hanging unit for shoes only. If you raised the upper rod/shelf you'd end up with double the hanging space. Use see through bins to store loose items. Store them on the top shelf. Organize the closet so your blouses are all together. Do the same with your slacks, skirts and dresses.

I also have a 96" high closet, so I had the "top" shelf moved within a foot of the ceiling for extra storage, then hung the original clothes rod right below it. Half way down I installed a wider shelf for more storage and another rod below that. It doubled the space and I still had room on the floor for shoes. You can redesign shelves and rod placement to be where YOU need them, but use ALL of the "space" ... Hope this helps :)) Carol
