A Ruger 10 / 22 is pretty effective...and then you have some food too. LOL One question is why you do not want them in your yard. Are they getting into a garden? eating your flowers?.

Thank you for the suggestions but this doesn't answer my question because I would like something to deter them, and that is not going to harm the water tables or invironment in my area?
  • You could try mothballs and other strong smelling odor. I would even try coyote urine which deters deer too. I am not sure if Coyote urine is at hunting stores or not anymore but it is very effective at keeping away varmints.

Thanks for the answers, but I'm still hoping for more ideas. I would like to see a few more suggestions.
  • Squirrels are a creature of habit. Once they start coming around it is difficult if not impossible to stop them. Even using poisons to kill them will not stop others from checking out the area. They forage for food and once they find something they like, there is nothing stopping them. Keeping a cat helps but then its hard to keep the cat as they wander off of property. Some suggestions such as moving displays such as tin pans on strings help for about a few days, but once the critters realize that its not going to harm them, they come back. If your issue is with digging in garden, and attacking your veggies etc, Deer netting over the plants may help a bit, but there is really very little other then trapping and relocating the most likely hundreds of these gray rats that will work.

At any rate, here is a link that has any number of urine 'fixes'. I've never ordered from them, I'm not sure if they ship to California. For squirrels they recommend "Fox Urine". The link is here: http://www.predatorpee.com/ If you are able to order from them to CA, please let us know here at hometalk? As well as how the product worked for you. xox

When my brother had a few squirrels getting into his attic we first got the holes filled, then trapped with "rat" traps set with peanut butter. He lives in an urban area, so shooting them was not an option. Here at my home I am surrounded by countless acres of forest and we have squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, coyotes, bears, mountain lions etc. We define the boundary as "the house" they can be in the yard but not in the house.

It is amazing as to the damage squirrels can do. I think many forget just how damaging they can be to ones home, not to mention gardens, vehicles, etc. And they can be aggressive, which leads to a whole other set of 'issues'.
  • I am surrounded by Oaks and squirrels. If it weren't for our 1 yr old Australian Shepherd and Fox/Jack terrier, I would be asking how to get rid of squirrels. LOL Squirrels carry fleas and every so often a rabid squirrel is found here. Squirrels also breed 2x a year which makes it even more frustrating that in subdivisions and cities there are no predators (except cars that run them over) for them (coyote/fox/hawks). In the past I have used predator urine and had good success. Word of caution if you do find fox or other urine~wear rubber gloves and do not spill on you or you will stink for a while!
  • Get a bag of blood meal from the nursery, spread through garden. The squirrels don't like blood smell at all and it also is a mild fertilizer
