Should I paint this an entirely different colour?

Sia@South 47th
by Sia@South 47th
I was at my old place "The Ranch" and cleaned out a few more pieces. This guy is wood and has the original paint. I'm not emotionally invested into this piece. Plus he was only $10 bucks at a friend of mine's "Everything's Gotta Go Barn Sale". So what do y'all think?
Paint it an entirely new colour? OR Just clean him up and use my Briwax?
Thank you Hometalkers!! xo
Paint him all new or just clean him up and Briwax him?

It is pretty fabulous as is!
  • Z Z on Aug 04, 2013
If it's solid wood I'd strip the paint and see what you've got under there. If it's pretty then I'd use colored stains to refinish it. Awesome find for just ten dollars! As much as I want to come out and meet up with you I almost fear what goodies I'd find and want to bring home! LOL

Clean him up and Briwax him, and live with him awhile. You can always paint or strip later. I think he's a great find, love him!

Thank you @Larissa ~ Prodigal Pieces , @Sherry C , @Z , and @R.V.R. Farris !!. I'm going to go with the majority and Clean him up, then Briwax him. Should take me about a week, with working etc. I'll post him for SURE when he's ready for his "Moment" LOLOL!! Many thanks to you all once again. This is why I LOVE Hometalk! Great people, Great advice!! xo

Oh but Sia, I already have WAY more than I need. Our grandson, whom I care for daily while his Daddy works, starts school a week from tomorrow and my plan is to start working on my furniture stash so I can finally sell it.

I think you should make it look like it did when it was new. but that's just me.
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Aug 04, 2013
@Sia@South 47th I agree too with the majority - clean and wax. What a neat piece. If you eventually tire of it you can sand and as suggested by @Z use coloured stains to revitalize to you taste. Don't think I would do a solid stain on the whole piece, the varied colours would give it a whimsical carousel feel to it.

I agree as well, clean and wax. As the finish looks nice and rustic as is, and I'd be afraid that painting it might either make it loose some of its character, or harm the vintage finish. Thanks for sharing and for asking! :)

Think it will look great either way! What a cool find! Sheesh....I live in barn country and I never find things like that! o)
  • Sue Ross Sue Ross on Aug 05, 2013
great score! may I ask WHY you think he needs wax? my first impression is to paint brush dust him, and live with him for a while.....If you are going to sell him later you want to do as little as possible to the original finish. (SPLENDID FIND!)

He's so adorable! I agree to live with him for a while then someone may come up with an idea you just love and have to do. I love everyone's input because sometimes it's something I would have never thought of & I love it! If you find another Barn sale like that let me know, I'll drive down & come your not to far.

Thank you ALL!!!! I'm going to do the clean up and Briwax him! I was going to strip him as I thought about it, but I think you ALL are right. Just clean him up and wax him, leaving the original finish intact, as many of you have suggested! If nothing else he'll be clean at least LOL!!!! I've already brushed him early this morning and will work on him when I get home this afternoon from work. I don't think I'll fix his 'dings' either, since none of them make him unsteady. He's very sturdy and heavy. Give me a week and I'll post how he looks. Then if you all think he looks good, I'll leave him alone and send him to a new home! LOVE everyone here at HT!! You all are so creative and give me suggestions that are so very helpful, especially when I get 'stuck', in my usual way of doing things. Thank you so much!!!!!

@Tammy Sure!! I'll let you know when one is coming up! I'd love to 'Treasure Hunt' with you! My friend only has this one, once per year at the beginning of Aug. I'll post some of the other things I picked up there, as well. xox

  • Jim L Jim L on Aug 06, 2013
Clean him, wax him and leave him alone! DO NOT paint him. If you paint him, any value will be lost.
  • Cindi Glaim Cindi Glaim on Aug 06, 2013
No, don't touch it, you'll take away it's original life, it's BEAUTIFUL as it is, and if you ever want to sell it at an auction, or sell it won't be worth as much, leave it old & rustic, that it's beauty!!

Paint? No. Briwax? Yes. That horse looks so mellow, just needs some TLC.
  • Leona G Leona G on Aug 06, 2013
If you want to brighten the flowers before you wax it you could use a water base stain that would just brighten the colors but not change them over much. I agree with everyone else it would be a shame to lose that old finish.

I think you have made the right choice to clean him up and enjoy him as an original with all the little flaws, if any!
  • Kathryn Kathryn on Aug 06, 2013
I just read about this gloss remover called Clean strip sander deglosser it may save some sanding time. It's gotten some great reviews. I'm going to try it on this hutch I have-I'll also be asking for suggestions when the time comes to refinish this piece. My suggestion for your pony, look around the area where you'll display him and then decide how best he would look in that space.
  • Sia@South 47th Sia@South 47th on Aug 06, 2013
I'm still cleaning him up, no repairs to be made. He'll wear his dings with honour! No paint or stain, just Briwax. ;) Thank you all!!! xoxox
