I think beige or cashmere looks great on the walls and it really looks good with a black bedroom suite. I hope this helps you with your decision.

Paint the wall behind the headboard a deep red and the remaining walls a light to medium grey. Paint the woodwork bright white. The room will pop with almost any furniture. Put a cozy picture or floral arrangement above the headboard.

Much of what suggests male/female in decorating is the decor rather than the color: tailored bed skirt or ruffled, floral comforter or plain or plaid. That being said gray, taupe, green, darker Blues & reds could work. Maybe decide on a theme and pick the wall color to go with it. Beach or seaside suggests blue while there was an Eddie Bauer paint at Lowes called Cabin Red that was beautiful.

Neutral-colored walls, and bedding that looks tailored and sophisticated, such as a geometric print, or a solid with tone-on-tone or accent piping or stripe. No frilly lamps or ruffled pillows! Think of a high-end hotel room's decor.
