Simply spray them down with a degreaser allowing to sit to break down the residue. If need be use a scrub brush or brillo then wash with soap and water.

it's best to clean right away by shutting off the grill and closing cover. Then, wipe down; some people use bunched up foil to scrape

in the UK there is a product called cloudy ammonia, if you put the grills in a large strong plastic bag then add a saucer of ammonia seal up the bag and leave overnight by the next day the burnt on grunge should rinse off easily. I am sure you have something similar in the US, be warned it stinks.

I agree with Poppy. Put them in a large trash bag, pour in some ammonia and tie the bag shut. Leave the bag outdoors over night and the next day the food and grime will just wash off with a rinse from the water hose. Make sure you rinse it well. So easy and no scrubbing.

That works really great. I have always used that for the grates in my oven too. No scrubbing.

I have used this method many times with grill, smoker and oven grates. Take a large plastic tub, (i like the one with about 4 inch sides& wide as possible), put water and dawn dishwashing soap in plastic tub and swish around the dawn. Lay the grates in the tub and walk away for about an hour! come back with a cloth or scrubby and just wipe!! sometimes I have to scrub really baked on stuff but most everything wipes right off. Then I take the hose and rinse well, leave outside to dry... they look almost new every time. Good Luck!

I take off the grill, spray both sides with Easy Off Oven Cleaner and put it inside a large black plastic bag. close the bag and let sit for a few hours or over night and spray with garden hose to remove grime. Pretty easy.

Oven cleaner used outside for 30 to 60 minutes and rinsed well. May need a second cleaning if really cruddy.

Just remember not to rinse the grills where they will run into water supply or ground water. Rinse in a tub then dump water in toilet. You could also try the same thing using baking soda lemon juice and vinegar in a bag over night. less toxic.

No difference if you have a septic system as far as groundwater is concerned. Oven cleaner is actually a lye product.

You know what - simple, no faffing about. Take the grills onto the garden and water blast. Once they have dried, oil sparingly on both sides and leave. Next time you use them, there MAY be a little smoke but they'll be clean.

Hello Gee, hope this helps you out.

Mix two cups of water with two cups of vinegar in a spray bottle. Spray your grill grates with the mixture. Let sit for 10 minutes. After the 10 minutes is up, brush your grates clean with a grill brush—no rinsing required.
