Can you identify this plant?

Patti Downs

We've had this in a pot for a few years and bring it inside for the winter months here in central Illinois. The small purple and white flowers grow along a bract-like stem. It tends to start blooming in July and continues for several weeks.
Central woody trunk about an inch in diameter. About four feet tall.
Cluster of the small purple and white flowers.
Trying to show the foliage and the bloom structures.
