Growing plants with a fish in the vase

Years ago it was popular to have a plant with a fish in the vase, but I can't remember the kind of plant we used! It was a particular kind. The fish was a Siamese fighting fish. It ate from the plant's roots and never had to be fed.

You might be looking at Peace Lily.

May I ask why did you want to do this? Betta or Siamese Fighting fish is a Labyrinth Fish. It actually needs water surface to gulp air and breathe. The plant root will deprive the poor animal of such. Bettas as also carnivorous fish. They do not live on plant roots. So in the end this idea is actually slowly suffocating and starving the poor animal. Please reconsider doing this project. Thank you.

Yes, Siamese Fighting Fish (Beta) in large vase with Peace Plant floating on top. I've always thought it was cruel. Fish needs more space and more air; doesn't live very long.

Now I'm not sure I want to do this at project at all! I never considered that I was being cruel to the fish. It always looked happy! : )

Glad to hear it Terry. Maybe just do the plant thing without the fish. Add loads of sparkly glass stones. Way better looking too.
