Making a chalkboard door

I would love to do something for my mom and dad and thought of making up a chalkboard and pin board with photos as well. Do you have any other DIY ideas that could be better?

I personally dislike chalk! Messy, powdery residue everywhere on the floor?You can cut white hardboard (Slick, plastic coated and often sold cheaply for shower enclosure walls) and use it for a dry erase whiteboard.

Cover a backboard with foil you have crumpled and carefully unwrapped.Smooth it down but aim for a textured affect. Paint and then adhere your photos.

I like the chicken wire idea, and the cork board on bottom. i think because your parents are older, they could pin reminders of doctor app , special events ,etc. on there.
