World Map Art Collage

I love projects made with maps. I came up with this project a few years back because I needed to use up some damaged old maps. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away!
I started with blank stretched canvases from thrift stores and a stack of old, worn maps.
It was a simple project that just took a little math! First I cut squares out of the maps and arranged them on the canvases until I was satisfied with the layout.
Then I used decoupage medium to adhere the map squares.
After drying I added another layer of decoupage medium to protect the paper.
When the project was completely dry (I actually waited until the next day.) I went back over the edges of the squares with a charcoal pencil and rubbed that in with my fingers.
Here's a close up:
I actually painted the edges of the small canvases with black paint.
Here's the large one. I didn't paint the edges on it but now that I look at it I think I'll go back and add black paint.
The large one has been hanging over our bed this summer.
I love the soft blue and green colors in the maps. I think they go perfectly with our light green walls and made the room feel very "summer-y".

What about you? Have you made anything with maps lately?

I LOVE how this came out! I've used maps for projects before but never thought of "tiling" them like this. This one is on my "Make" list. Now I need more maps. So clever of you!
