Updating bathroom in rental

the casa we are renting in Baja is charming; however the 2 guest room bathrooms make me shudder.
Complete retile & replacement of sink not on the books for rental
need to either remove green colour on tile or paint walls to divert eye away from green tile? Looking for suggestions, keeping in mind, the Home Depot in La Paz not as well stocked as those in USA & Canada
love to hear/see your suggestions
guest room bath - hate the green - this bathroom has tub
guest room bath - this green not as bad - the bathroom only shower
shower curtain belongs in 2nd pic - provides me with colourful options for painting walls

    love it
  • I think you are on the right track with the shower curtain. Trying to paint or resurface the tile is expensive and may not hold up in a bathroom with all of the moisture. You are better off trying to work with the existing color and finding accessories that will divert your attention. It will look like it was planned. I could see that fun curtain, white walls and pop it with red towels and accessories.

Maybe look for material with this shade of green but loads of other colors.Right now I see loads of turq. with this shade of green Then staple to the wall where there is no water. Hey wallpaper would work to if you use wallpaper paste. It will allow wall paper to come off easier. Make that green the 4th color not the first in your color scheme.(red, yellow , truq, blue etc.)

Thanks Wanda. The shower curtain I found for this room has tons of colour in it. Will keep it & decorate accordingly. Buying that much material would be quite expensive. I am looking for paint option.

From picture one it appears that there is room to place a piece of furniture in front of the tile, to the right of the sink. This would do two things, one it would cover up a lot of that green tile, and two it would give you storage space, it looks like a rustic piece might fit in nicely. Another thought is to put a folding screen to the right of the sink and place a small chair in front of it. I think I would try to work with the existing green tile since it is a rental but definitely downplay the color by bringing in other colors. Also you could hang large candle holder sconces right and left of the mirror to pull your eye upwards away from the tile.

Thx Patty. The room this bathroom belongs to is going to be done in SouthWestern style so, I am looking for rustic pieces. And bathroom needs storage - none, nada!

Even though the tub in first bar has no shower, a long shower curtain would be an easy way to hide the green tub and its surround. A multicolor print would be great. Then you could follow-up with paint color pulled from the curtain. HTH.

Thanks Pat. No curtain rod, but will add that. 3rd pic posted is shower curtain I hung in 1st guest bath.

I would start with some fresh white grout. Then, since they are not so expensive, maybe a new sink with storage to break-up the green. Then I would add some color to the walls...Stencils in your Southwestern style with blasts of color.

Get a tile stencil and stencil some of the tiles with a coordinating color

They make paint specifically for tile. You could paint it all in some shade of tan/brown that coordinates with the Saltillo tile floor, maybe the grout color. Then paint the walls above in a southwest color to match your new decor.

Cover the walls with pretty material or fabric shower curtains. Just tack at top and bottom or use velcro. Repeat on outside of that tub.
