Good afternoon Lee - standard leg height for a King size or Queen size bed is 29". It can be higher or lower but that seems to be the magic number. The old doors we use to make the headboards will vary in width, (which is the dimension that affects the height of the headboard when the door is turned on its side).

If we only have 24" wide doors to work with, (because these old doors are getting harder and harder to find) in some cases if a Customer wants the headboard to be taller we will seam a piece of wood along the bottom of the door, (once it is turned on its side) to add extra height to the headboard. Keep in mind that the crown molding you use and thickness of the shelf on top will also affect the total height of the headboard. Please see the attached pic of a King size headboard that we added an extension for a Customer.

very nice! How did you find or create the top part of the headboard?

I used crown molding and a plywood shelf and put a trim detail on the edge of the plywood Shelf. I then applied a base color and used a dry brush technique over the top to give the distressed look
