We have a bit of an awkward space in our apartment’s hallway. It is kind of narrow, but wide enough that left alone, it would feel oddly empty. Recently, we found a great solution- a floating bookshelf! Which is terrific except for one overlooked problem: our books were falling over the sides. We knew we needed to find a solution when, in the middle of the night, we were rudely awakened by the foreboding and distinct “thump thump thump” of a selection of our books crashing to the floor.
So we concluded that we were going to need some bookends. And, being a Hometalker, I was determined to make my very own set.
When we moved, we forgot to put the bed risers back under our beds- a fact we only realized after we had already set up our bedroom. We decided that we actually didn’t need them for our beds, but I saved them with the hope of being able to use them in a later project. This was their time to shine! They were the perfect size and weight to be the base of the bookends.

Then, inspired by other Hometalkers’ bookend projects, I set out to the craft store to find something fun and decorative to top the bookends with. When I found these clay pomegranates for $1.50 a piece, I knew I had found my answer!
*Tip- I taped up the rim of the bed riser with painter’s tape so that I could keep to a consistent straight line. Make sure to seal the painter’s tape with a credit card or the like ( I used my license) so that the paint does not drip down.
And so, I whipped out some fun acrylic paints and painted the base a deep blue. (the sides of the bed risers were already painted silver randomly enough, I liked the color so I left it alone).
I used the lid of a Mason Jar as a stencil to add some personality to the project.
Some red acrylic paint for the pomegranates ( I debated leaving them white, but in the end let my husband make the final call, and he really was excited about them looking like real pomegranates in red)
I whipped out my adorably tiny, travel E-600 and glued the pomegranates to the bases ( once all the paint dried- about 20 minutes).
Voila!! Problem solved! And, now we have an added touch of decor for our narrow hallway!

I must be missing something. What gives weight to these bed risers? Is there a lip to slip under the first book? How does the stack stand up?

How did you get the design in the jar cover?

I like these, I think I will use the idea and modify it to have a superhero on top for my grandsons bookshelf!
