Cutting upholstery foam

by Susan
I am repurposing my couch cushions for my outdoor swing since foam is so expensive. The couch cushions are 5" thick foam so I want to cut them in half to get 2 1/2" thickness. I know how to cut them for the length and width but not sure how to make sure I get a consistent cut for the thickness. Any suggestions.

Mark 2 1/2 inches in several places on each side of the foam, then use an electric knife to cut in two. But make sure you follow the marks.

Agree with Poomacranch. Also, make sure the blade of the electric knife is vertically straight . Easier if one person holds the knife steady against the side of a table and another person feeds the foam. Same motion as if you're sewing.

Thanks. Do you think a reciprocating saw would work.

I dont think it would work as well as the electric kitchen knife it is only one blade that may snag on the foam pulling it in an uneven way. Try cutting up some scrap foam first to get the idea. The kitchen electric knife always works for me.

Use an electric knife. Easy peasy!

Electric Carving Knife every time. Commercially they also use Hot wire Cutter.
