What is the best way to stain a concrete basement floor?

I am looking to do my basement in a "loft-like" style and would like the just stain the concrete floors for that type of look. I have seen basement floors like this before and really like the look. I would really like it if I could make the stain resemble the look of slate to match other slate used in my decor. Thanks!

Yes it is! Would you suggest I stain my basement floor before or after I drywall the walls?

Mark, I had to think about the pros and cons of both methods for a minute but, if it were me, I'd do it after I drywalled, taped, textured, primed and painted. Due to the fact that stain "flies' during application, I would mask the newly painted walls at least two feet up (start at the bottom of the baseboard(s) If you finish the floor before drywall, the messy process that drywall installation is, may damage the new floor.

prep & stain the floor 1st & apply 1 coat of a good sealer or epoxy,,, tape down protective cardboard overlapping the sheets so NO tape touches the floor,,, finish the room - apply top coat of sealer/epoxy - place baseboards,,, that's how its done by pro's & diy'ers who want to do it right

Johns right about this one! If the sealer were water based, 2-3 applications would be the proper approach...
