You can use a sponge painting technique. Dilute the paints with some water, dip a sponge in the paint, dab the sponge on some newspaper to remove some of the paint. Then sponge the bricks alternating/mixing colors. Use a brush to lightly smooth out the finish if you want. Make a mistake, just wipe off with a damp clothe.

We primed ours with Kilz primer and then I dabbed each brick with chalk paint - love the results!

I would NEVER paint brick! If you ever change your mind, you have to sand blast the paint off! Try this instead: Build a Baltic birch frame and panel over the brick. You could then get the thin wall brick pieces and paint that! No pressure no permanent paint that it takes a sand blaster to remove if you want to redecorate or sell your home! It is a "win-win"!!!!

The bricks around my fireplace were dull red, I had hated them for 15 years. I decided to plant them a darker grey and then I sponged on a lighter gray - I was upsset with myself for waiting so long to change the color. I really love the change it made in my living room.

Ugly brick will always be ugly, but instead of paint, use masonry stain. You can get it in semi transparent which will let some of the brick color show through or you can get solid stain which completely covers the color. Paint sits on top of the brick and can flake off. Stain penetrates and will not flake off. We stained the brick on the outside of our house. After 8 years of 100 degree summers and snow in the winter, the stain looks like we just did it. I also stained both of my brick fireplaces inside. Stain also lets the texture of the brick show.

I used Sherwin Williams water based solid concrete stain, but any paint store will have a similar product. I used a dark charcoal on the inside and outside of my fireplace because I was going for a certain look. If you ever decide to change the color and want to paint it, the stain will act like a primer and your paint will adhere to the stain instead of just sitting on top of the bare brick.
