Area Rugs

Donna

This stranded bamboo floor is very busy. Could anyone give suggestions on an area rug that would go well?
The walls are actually taupe not green as they appear in the photo.
Colors in the room.
The curtains.
The actual wall color!

I would definitely choose a simple sisal rug with a pop of color. No prints... It would make the space too chaotic. I'd choose one like this: http://www.naturalarearugs.com/sisal/premade-kharma.php?mm=16#.Uh9mgmTBInQ to bring out the eggplant/mauve tones in your curtains.

@Alexandra Arena Thank you for turning me on to that Natural Area Rugs website! It looks like they have nice rugs. I had not heard of them before.

If it was my home, I'd go for a neutral shag rug
  • Marie Marie on Aug 29, 2013
I would get a big oval braided rug in green, bron and red tones
  • Anna Garris Anna Garris on Aug 29, 2013
I would choose a large neon color to complement the other colors in the room

Hi Donna! I think @Alexandra Arena 's suggestion is great. I also think a gray shag rug would look good. I put together a few ideas while I was browsing the web: http://polyv.re/12QSNoo . I am currently hoping that the rug I ordered online will work! ;)
    • Donna Donna on Aug 29, 2013
@Caitlyn Do you really think grey could work in there?
  • Patricia Giuria Patricia Giuria on Aug 29, 2013
Hi, you can use a solid color, in my case I prefer a Dhurrie rug they are not expensive and if you like in pastel colors, you will not have problems to clean it. I wash them in my patio with my hair shampoo and then use tubo con acqua per rimuovere la shampoo.

First of all..... WHY did you purchase brown chairs when you have a black leather ottoman? If you cannot dispose of the black leather ottoman, I would try to incorporate a floral rug that has: black/light and dark gray tones/mauve and creams colors. Also, get some brighter pillows on those chairs. Colors really needs to be incorporated into the room, also some interesting artwork that would also pick up the colors of the room would help.
    • Donna Donna on Aug 29, 2013
@Patty C The ottomans are dark brown with bronze buttons on top. The picture makes them look darker than they are. I would like more color though. The room is a work in progress. I would love to find some new art also. :) thank you for your suggestions.

I have no answer for this one :) I can't wait to see what is suggested

You may find this strange, but with the patterns and bamboo floor you have going, I could see a beautiful Sea Grass rug in here. That would keep it earthy and well balanced. It would actually subdue the bamboo, yet bring out the colors in the floor. Keep the pattern simple and let the room pull itself together. Many of the Sea Grass rugs have a banded edge that comes in a variety of color that will actually designate an area of the room rather than just bleed out into space.

@Donna I would definitely go with the Taupe as it is neutral and has nothing about it that would ricochet off of your bamboo flooring. This rug is subtle, but makes a big statement.
  • Rivka I Rivka I on Aug 29, 2013
I would go for a monochromatic area rug with absolutely NO pattern.
    • Donna Donna on Aug 29, 2013
@Rivka I do you have an example of what you're suggesting?
  • Monika Monika on Aug 29, 2013
Depending on traffic- Id go with a flokati rug-my personal fav.

I like Therese C. suggestion for Sea Grass. I would also ditch the herky furniture and go with a more modern couch and different chairs. you already have some Asian pieces, so go with that. I envy you your floor as I would like to decorate with it.Beautiful...
    • Donna Donna on Aug 29, 2013
@Carol M I think the furniture is more in sync with the Tuscan look I'm trying to achieve. Thank you the floor is new. My boyfriend installed it himself. We love it! It's golden zebra stranded bamboo.

The purple/ mauve shades are not a good accent color for the floor. Since I am sure you just put the floor down, you will probably need to change your color scheme.I think you need to go with oranges and earth tones (greens, golds, orange, reds, a deep blue with some green in it, rich colors) May not be your favorite colors but the undertones of the floor need warm accent colors. Sorry, the mauve tones are not working, maybe you can use those gorgeous drapes in another room!! Also the wall color needs to be warmer too, it has too much gray in it!

@Donna Silky curtains in damask finish, maybe Celery or Smoked Lavender color, would look fantastic with both the kitchen and living room. I like the curtains you have, but feel that they bleed a little too much red tone into the kitchen with that pretty paper. If it were me, I would go with the Smoked Lavender to play up that beautiful paper and yet stay neutral to the room.
  • Donna Donna on Aug 29, 2013
I'm thinking an off white berber rug.
  • Rivka I Rivka I on Aug 29, 2013
I added a pic to my post so you can see what I mean.
  • Linda Harrison Linda Harrison on Aug 29, 2013
I love your accent furniture pieces. They are gorgeous and a good look with the flooring!! This setting looks much better and warmer. Maybe it was just the lighting that made it look so mauve in the photos. and the walls look gray. Sometime photos do not show the true colors the way you hope they will.
    • Donna Donna on Aug 30, 2013
@Linda Harrison Ain't that the truth! Lol! Thank you!

Redirects the wood pattern into another direction, incorporates the flower from the pillows and blends well with the curtains.
    • Donna Donna on Aug 30, 2013
@Pamela Brandvold I wish that this website allowed me to click on a picture and make it bigger. They are hard to see! Could be because I'm on my iPad.

I like the seagrass. Another option would be a solid color textured rug. The new shags are beautiful and comfy on the feet.
    • Donna Donna on Aug 30, 2013
@Carol King-ricca I'm leaning towards a neutral color so if I choose later to change out some colors the rug would still go.

Cream could work, but better to use color like you did w the throw on the sofa. Take plum from custom window treatments, just get the right shade. Rug should tie the room together and make your eye flow to walls, artwork, wndws. Must also be large enough to connect the sofa, loveseat. Style whatever YOU like that works for you.

I like the seagrass, furniture looks like mine, my carpet has always been chocolate. I have fun with pillows. now we are waiting on "African Sunset " tile
  • Tina Stuhr Tina Stuhr on Aug 30, 2013
I would put a little color in your room. Maybe a very soft aqua( or any color for that matter) rug and pillows or a throw on the couch!
  • Carol King-ricca Carol King-ricca on Aug 30, 2013
A solid color is a great idea. I chose a grey shag in my dinning room and love it.
  • Donna Donna on Aug 30, 2013
i'm looking at the seagrass. One reason is because my Pom I believe would be less likely to potty on it!
  • Rae E Rae E on Aug 30, 2013
Seagrass, Sisel or Jute Rugs work really well when we have pets. They also make some great indoor and outdoor rugs that are water resistant. Just a suggestion but Wayfair and Pier One have some afforable options for rugs. Hope this helps let us know how it turns out :) Happy Labor Day Holidays

Go with a oversized rug with rich deep colors and colorful throw pillows. Replace the ottomon with a table that is warmer and more friendly for this room.
  • Barbara Coppola Barbara Coppola on Aug 30, 2013
I would do an off white or light beige semi shag rug to lighten it up and give a soft texture to the floor. I saw some at Home Goods and Ikea, not too expensive.
  • Barbara Coppola Barbara Coppola on Aug 30, 2013
Looks like the pillow has an off white background....I think a lighter rug will work best to brighten up the area since the furniture, floor and drapery is all dark. Good Luck, post what you choose.
  • Virginia Virginia on Aug 30, 2013
Dare I say, forget about the floor and find a rug that you love and it will be perfect! Bring some color into your beautiful space that your family will enjoy.

Ballard designs has rugs you can make, you pick out the basic color or sisel and then choose a thick border to match your decor colors. If your on a budet home decorates.com has some great buys and a huge assortment.
  • I would think sisal.

Try a cream colored rug, this would really tie all the colors together,, and brighten up the whole room.

A cream colored rug with a pattern, ignored the floor, it will all flow. Check out Ikea, or Amazon.

All I can envision is an orange colored rug leaning toward coral. Really any warm color would work well, I think.
  • Linda Harrison Linda Harrison on Sep 03, 2013
I truly think what has happened her is there has been a distortion of the color in the photos of your beautiful home. All of you accent pieces are beautiful! It just must have been the lighting from the flash that distorted the color. In different lighting it all works.
  • Calendargirl Calendargirl on Sep 04, 2013
I agree that a light rug would tie everything together. Before you decide on a light or dark rug, take into consideration the amount of natural daylight the room receives. A good tip is that if you want to see how different colours affect the overall feel of the space, look around your house for rug sized items, such as throws, bed sheets, large towels, in different colours and lay them on the floor to substitute for a rug. Stand in different areas of the room, for example in the doorway and in front of the window. If you can, take photos and compare the different effects. Our living space, which is dark, has been transformed by a rug with a light background and we have wood flooring similar to yours.

I think due to having my dog that I'm going to go with a seagrass rug and thinking about a green border. Maybe one i am seeing from Ballard Designs. I'm also now looking to get some pillows for the sofa! Please post pics of pillows that would pick up the room! Thinking some green, plum, coral, or any new suggestions from you! Thank you!

All that brown & black leather is a bit overwhelming. Ya need a little color. Just saw this today on Wayfair.
