Cheap and Cheerful Changes to a Rental Home

My daughter and family moved into a new rental house. Although very clean and renovated, it had a generic feel to it. My daughter wanted a modern rustic home.
She had already purchased a colourful rug, a comfy IKEA couch and a great chair that was on sale at Urban Barn for a song., as well as some decorative items to hang. To put these things together, we found an old wooden picnic/umbrella table at the Restore for $5.00. We took the legs off and sanded the top down, then washed 4 colors on the boards...off white, light gray, dark gray, and turquoise, my daughter's accent color. Found more great decorative pieces at Michaels on sale and attached them to the table top. The ampersand covers the hole for the umbrella. Hung it on the wall and it is the perfect focal point. Adding assorted cushions and tables in turquoise finishes this area off, as does the bronze floor lamp from, where else, IKEA.
The dining room wall cried out for wallpaper. We found this wood look paper at Bouclair for$35 per double roll. Two rolls were all we needed. It is meant to go on vertically, but we chose a horizontal application. With my son-in-law on one end and me on the other, we easily applied it. We chose to stagger the obvious markings so it looked more natural. The clock was another Urban Barn find. The bench against the wall is an as-is bookcase from Ikea. With round seat cushions, also IKEA. The IKEA chairs were a Kijiji find and super cheap (4 for less than 1 new one). The curtains were from the bedrooms and reused since they were the right gray color
Amazing what can be made of scrap and sale items.

Not shown...on the opposite wall an large framed photo of a city scape did not work in the room. It was primed and then painted over. An abstract double arrow head was painted on it in complimentary colors. The room has received multiple compliments and the low budget is not reflected in the final product.

You turned this into a beautiful home. I especially like the shiplap wall. My husband and I have been talking about a shiplap wall in our bedroom. I had no idea you could buy wallpaper to achieve this look. I showed my hubby and we both agree, we are going for the wallpaper instead of real (and more expensive) wood. Thank you for sharing this. We do truly appreciate it.
