How to Make a Chalkboard With a Old Frame

I love trying something new! New for me at least and maybe for you also. My mom called or texted awhile back and said I have two older frames do you want them? Umm.. yes please!! I said yes before I even knew what they looked like. I’m glad I did because who doesn’t love a do it yourself wood project? I was really excited when I saw how big they were… Perfect for a present for my nieces.
Isn’t she lovely??? Propped up against my beautiful garage paneling with battery jumper cables behind:) BTW… Why aren’t these in my vehicle?

Anyway… this is what I started with and here are the simple instruction for prepping the frame.

Simple Instruction for Frame Prep

Wipe the dirt off 🙂

Sand anything that needs sanded
Paint (I had chalkboard paint so I didn’t prime)

Color for chalkboard paint is Pomegranite Red from Lowes (2-3 coats of paint needed)
The below picture was taken in the backseat of my vehicle after my purchase…

The inside of my picture frame was 24″ by 18″. I headed to lowes and caught someone in the aisle working 🙂 and told him what I was doing and what I wanted. I ended up purchasing a 24″ x 24″ piece and would need to cut down.
I should of asked him to cut it while I was there… it would of been much easier.. but I didn’t… I cut the piece down to size with my jig saw at home (p.s. I need more work on the jig saw)

Instruction for DIY chalkboard

Sand!!!! and Prime

Follow the instructions on the chalkboard paint; you can buy chalkboard paint at most places for as little at $6.99 at target.

I painted with a $2.99 roller as shown above.. (3 coats with waiting in between)

Make sure to season your chalkboard and voila! it’s ready 🙂

Glue to the back or use small nails

I painted my pantry door with chalkbaord paint a couple of years ago and I love it!!!!
Should I add glitter to the frame for a couple of little girls? It’s a question I keep asking myself.. Will there father be mad… or will he simply shake his head like normal? hehe!

I loved working on this do it yourself wood project … maybe because the girls will have fun with it on Christmas 🙂

Cheers!

I used the E6000 glue with my frame and plywood. I generously applied the glue and let it sit for a day or two. Maybe add a couple of nails to the back for additional support. GOOD LUCK!!!
