Mary T
by Mary T
We just got the white sofa and chair and now I am very confused on what color I should paint the paneled walls. This room has a tendency to be dark. I was thing of lite gray, pale beige, or aqua. I would love any suggestions. Thank you!

Personally, I'd leave them as they are. LOVE your white sofa, and I think the walls are the perfect match for a beach-cottage look!

I instantly leaned towards a light grey color! What a beautiful room! Love the furniture!

One of the most beautiful shades that makes you feel 'alive' and 'beautiful' yourself is the lighter, softness of the peach/apricot family of color with the wood trim in your house a 'pearl' color. I have seen this combination and it is gorgeous. I personally find dark colors to be depressing. Be happy when your through that's the most important thing. Also light greens bring out a positive you. Keep smiling and paint to your heart's content. :) 'Barbara Carter

Once the room is painted don't forget to look at changing the wood furniture color as well and maybe even the wicker. B.C.

Or you could cozy it up with a dark grey color, like we did our kitchen.
  • Julie Moyna Julie Moyna on Sep 14, 2013
I vote for light gray too
  • Sue Sue on Sep 14, 2013
Hi Mary. So excited when I saw you are from Ky. Me too!! I think the light gray would be very nice. If you painted it in any shade of blue, I think you would have a hard time finding one that would go with and not detract from all your blue accessories. Just my opinion.

I love the color Indian River by SW. It's a perfect greige. Hope this helps!
  • The amount of natural light in there seems low, I would opt for something light, one of my fav's in Coastal Fog AC-1 by Benjamin Moore

You already have different shades of blue throughout the area, so I would go with aqua! It would be beautiful and really make the room pop!
  • Leona G Leona G on Sep 14, 2013
Since the blue/green of your accents seems to be a favorite color I would go with a white color with a tint of that color added. A couple that you might like are aquacade, watersquirt, and brooklet all by sherwin williams. You can go the site and try the colors out. These are all in the white color group. Good luck
  • Gail Salminen Gail Salminen on Sep 14, 2013
@Mary T a very challenging question. Ofcourse a lot depends on you tastes. You have a lot of great suggestions here, each with their own merit. On my personal level, I would vote for a soft aqua/blue. Houz has a link that shows various blue paints in various rooms. It might give your a better idea of how to view the room and choose. http://www.houzz.com/blue-paint-color There are a lot of choices there as well as a lot of inappropriate shades for your room, but there a also alot that may work just right for you. In most they also have the colour number in the description. I would keep the trim a white colour, I think that will set off whatever wall colour you choose. Thanks for posting and do update us on your decision/colour etc.

A really soft butter yellow.. makes a room look so good in artificial and low light and would look great with the blue and green
  • Amy Woods Amy Woods on Sep 14, 2013
I would pull one of the neutral colors of the stone from the fireplace or a light blue to go with your accents. It depends on what you want the room to feel like. Those two colors would make the room calm and soothing. If you want a more cheerful, slightly more energized look, the coral or soft peach would work. Both of those are different values of orange. All of your accents are blue. Blue and orange are complementary colors. Putting complementary colors together creates a more energized feel.
  • Nancy Nancy on Sep 14, 2013
I agree with Amy in selecting a color from the fireplace. I would go with a light taupe and paint moldings white. This would pull all of your brown tones together and highlight your sofa and chair. Your blue family would be accessories.

Benjamin Moore has two colors that I think might work great in your room but so much depends on lighting it is hard to say for sure from a picture. I love Edgecomb Gray or it's slightly darker version of Revere Pewter (HC172 and Hc173). These are kind of a beige/gray with green undertones. I have used this in both my homes and they look so very different depending on the light. It is even fun to watch how these colors change from morning to night. If you want a more blue undertone, try Eternity (AF695). To me this is really the classic French gray but, again depending on your lighting, can come across as more of a grayed blue rather than a gray with blue undertone. You may be able to get a sample of these at your local BM dealer. If at all possible, I always test by painting a large sample square (at least 12" x 12"), put it over a larger piece of white, then hold it up to the wall. But remember to test your color in more than one wall. A dark corner will look really different than a bright, window lit wall.

A soft buttery yellow would be light and yet cozy at the same time. It would also show off all the pieces you have chosen for these rooms, which I love! Great job BTW.

I just painted my kitchen Cobblestones by Valspar and it is a wonderful warm neutral color. It reminds me of sand because it has a wonderful yellow undertone. It goes well with browns, blues and white. I have it in my hallways too, but I put it in my kitchen because I don't get much light in there with only one window. Good luck with your choice....with so many colors to choose from it can be overwhelming.
  • Jmarie813 Jmarie813 on Sep 14, 2013
Light warm green. Get samples til you find the one you love
  • Suedu56 Suedu56 on Sep 14, 2013
I agree with @Briget ....a light yellow would work well with the brick fireplace.
  • Laura Garcia Laura Garcia on Sep 14, 2013
I would go with a very light grey...like Amazing Grey by Sherwin Williams. Be careful with a beige or taupe...they can look a little pink sometimes.
  • N. Susan Hart N. Susan Hart on Sep 14, 2013
I think the grey tones or beige tones would be good. You might get tired of blue walls.
  • Sandy Lueker Sandy Lueker on Sep 14, 2013
With the wicker and white furniture, I would go for a toasty brown color..it would really warm up the room...I am about to paint a bedroom that color and it will have white furniture in it...
  • Peggy Felix Peggy Felix on Sep 14, 2013
I think a pale mint green with pale rose accent!!
  • Sabren Sabren on Sep 14, 2013
on the other side of the color wheel from your favorite colorsof blue I believe is the yellow so I would also go with a very soft yellow.
  • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Sep 14, 2013
How about a very light yellow? It would make it look airier and fresh.. I think with the light blue and white touches it would be beautiful.
  • Jean DeSavage Jean DeSavage on Sep 14, 2013
Your rooms have a feel of a french country home, especially with the french provencial coffee table in the living room. If you used the suggested light buttery yellow, use a VERY light one. Yellow has a way of appearing much brighter after it's dried. Since you said that the room is somewhat dark, I would stay away from any dark color. If you were going to use something other than the yellow, you need to decide if you want the room to appear and feel warm, or cool and zen like in colors. With the neutrals you already have in the room, I would go with a warmer color, whatever that color will be. Though grey is very popular right now, I personally don't like it, since I live in Michigan and the winter here is grey enough for me, I sure don't want it in my home! You've done a great job already in your room, I'm sure you'll get the best color for you. Do be sure to sample the color you choose on a large sample piece and be sure to have it one every wall for a full day so you can see how it changes. Paint on a window wall will look much different from a wall where the sun actually hits the wall.

a soft blue, change the way the furniture sits, and build some big bookshelves on that wall across from the fire place if your going to keep the T.V on the wall, then use your decorating ideas on the shelves, I really like your furniture you placed around the fireplace, really cute!
  • Alisa Inman Alisa Inman on Sep 14, 2013
A nice soft gray would be pretty. It's become one of my favorite colors!
    • Terra Gazelle Terra Gazelle on Sep 17, 2013
@Alisa Inman Gray is a favorite of mine also..a light dove gray. It has that touch of blue in it. Grat goes well with Blue and Greens.
  • Yvette Yvette on Sep 14, 2013
Love your home. But I'd stay away from the beige and tans. You've got brown floors, brown in the wicker furniture. I agree with Kandy. I'd go with a very light blue. Use your blues and tans for accents. It looks like your dining room rug has some purple/lavender in it. That would go great with the blue and give you another accent color to tie the rooms together.
  • Mary Laniewski Mary Laniewski on Sep 14, 2013
You have to ask yourself if you want cool are warm colors? Your sofa is white.. I would go with a pretty turquise with white wood work. You can always change out your pillows to make a room look different. Bring some swatches home and position on the wall. Lighting changes everything. Happy painting.
  • Patricia W Patricia W on Sep 14, 2013
You can actually go to Sherwin Williams, upload a photo of your room, and then play with their paint colors to see what you fall in love with!
  • Beverly Beverly on Sep 14, 2013
How about the red in your sofa pillow?
  • Sparkles Sparkles on Sep 15, 2013
what about a white washed color? Yellow, turquoise, mint green, or red? Give it an antique feel to the room.
  • Peggy Mason Peggy Mason on Sep 15, 2013
I went with bold colors the last time I painted and I love it... My antiques look beautiful against a wall of forest green. I do believe I am 'done' with light walls forever.
  • Cindy Cindy on Sep 15, 2013
I think it is very beautiful the way it is, but if you are wanting to warm it up a bit, then a warm gray (leaning toward a toasty taupe) would look lovely too.
  • Dawn Salhus Dawn Salhus on Sep 15, 2013
Grey, crisp white, warm pumpkin accents silver undertones for accent pieces.
  • Cheryl Hudson Cheryl Hudson on Sep 15, 2013
I would keep the blue accents and paint the walls a very, very light yellow. Also, no offense, but I would do away with some of the rugs to show more of the beautiful floors? To me so many rugs make it look cluttered.
  • Mary T Mary T on Sep 15, 2013
Thank you Cheryl, I love any advice I can get!
  • CORINNE CORINNE on Sep 16, 2013
You already have pops of blue as your accent color. I see light blue wall color with your white furniture and the blue pops throughout the room! Love it!
  • Bonnie Lewenza Bonnie Lewenza on Sep 16, 2013
The color that you have going on in your entrance way would be nice to carry onto your walls since you only used it as trim color. It would tie it in and you could do your trim in white.
  • April April on Sep 16, 2013
I would say pale beige or aqua would add a happy feel and lighten up the room, or perhaps a green (okay I'm a little biased on that one - as green is my favorite color LOL!) - But it's up to you as to what you feel you'd be most happy with. Please let us know what you decide! :)
  • Peg Peg on Sep 16, 2013
I WOULD USE A VERY PALE AQUA WITH WHITE WOODWORK & USE SAME PAINT & SAME WOODWORK IN YOUR FOYER SO THE COLORS FLOW THRU OUT BOTH ROOMS!
  • Mary T Mary T on Sep 16, 2013
April, aqua is my favorite color too. My front room is a light blue/aqua, and one of my guest rooms/grand daughters room is light blue so I think I am going to go with the greige color in a lighter shade. Many people suggested a pale yellow but I have that in our basement. I really love all of you for helping me figure this out! Thank you so much! I will try to get a better picture after we have painted, hopefully next week.

@Mary T - Ah, nice! It sounds like your whole house is light and airy. :) I understand about wanting to pick a different color. I hope the suggestions have helped here. I can sympathize, as paint is a big decision. You're very welcome and I'm interested in seeing your results! :)

The paint on my trim in the entry and on my coffee table and kitchen table and chairs is Annie Sloans duck egg blue and old white. I love this color, it's a perfect blue/green. I'm afraid of going dark because my house is small and to dark.

perrywinkle blue with all of your white and add pops of other color in your room accents..

Mary, It looks like we have the same colors in our homes. I used Sherwin-Williams 7030 Anew Gray. I also used Sherwin-Williams 6219 rain. It's beautiful!
  • Barbara Carter Barbara Carter on Sep 17, 2013
I would suggest getting rid of the panel. This would change the look of the whole area then texture your room and paint your favorite color that makes you feel bright and alive. :)
  • John John on Sep 17, 2013
Did you consider a light gray? A soft tan color will work also even using a soft gray as trim looks good and will fit in with your decor.
  • Diana Diana on Sep 19, 2013
Aqua would be serene and pop your accent colors. Let us know what you decide.

  • Sabren Sabren on Sep 21, 2013
hope we get to see what you decide and the finished room. good luck, what ever you pick I know it will look great and you will love it. Painting a room makes me feel so good when it is over and things are put back looking so clean and fresh.
  • John John on Sep 22, 2013
First, the color has to be what you personally are in-tune with. If you do not like gray, don't do it. If green is not your cup of tea, stay away from it. What color you decide on, has to also match the connecting rooms to have a good transition as you move about your home. Take paint samples or swatches and place them side to side and see if they match or flow together. Will the color go with the window treatment? The other colors such as pillows (cheap to replace, and new ones always look great) should also not clash. Get a pint of the color and paint a small section of the wall to see if you like it. It may cost a bit to do it, but most paint stores can work with you on picking a color that can be changed to try other variants of that color. Bottom line, if you like it, and are happy, don't pay attention to the other suggestions if you will not like it. This is the fun and joy of painting.
  • Cindy Cindy on Sep 23, 2013
John is right, you have to like the feel of the color first!

I think I may do the kitchen in a very pale aqua. My hubby won a retro fridge in white from GE so now I want to attack the kitchen too. I did get some adorable old chairs for the table and painted and distressed them. I think I am going to stencil the fridge in a frenchy way. :)
    • April April on Oct 18, 2013

Your thought on a soft gray is the best, it goes with everything and you have the right colors to complement with the gray. Also gray is very in right now and has been for the past year and from all reports it is here to stay. Go with the gray you won't be sorry. The color range on gray is very large from the gray/tan, to gray/blue, gray/green etc. Sherwin Williams has the best gray color scale, check them out.
