Shade for my front porch

Hi I have a front porch with a high ceiling that gets a lot of sun. I would like some creative suggestion how to get a little shade without blocking the front entry. Also we have round porch columns so can't really tie into them.

I put breezy full length "curtains" around mine EXCEPT for the step area. They were on rods placed about 3 inches from the top with the curtains on large metal rings so I could slide them back and loosely tie them to the columns whenever I wanted. I didn't get pictures of them and we have moved. The new owner told the realtor that was what drew her to the house.

Try planting some vertical shrubs or vines on the sides of the porch

I have used Patio Shades in white. You can pull them up or lower them easily

I know this isn't directly to your question but someone recently posted about staining/painting her concrete walkway and entrance. It looked very good. The poster was able to do it herself one weekend using a long handle roller. It's something you might consider to give a bit of polish to front of your house.

This is actually an old photo as it was raining yesterday and could not take a fresh shot. We have added a nice rug and some new furniture to our porch but the sun just kills all the plants and keeps us from sitting on the porch so that is what I am trying to solve.

I love climbing plants, but they never grow as fast as we want or need.

I love the idea of the curtains. All sorts of sites now carry "garden" or exterior drapes in many fabrics. Or you can stitch together some "hotel" white fabric shower curtains if that's more economical.

Personally, I'd make several color copies of this photo and chalk-color. (As in sheers") or paint" with whiteout or whatever to decide how and where they would best be hung, as in upper or lower roof line, or the tops of your side windows.

Decide curtain rods or wires in white or blue of your trim.

My concern with the shades is that they will just be too horizontal, negating the architects purpose in the pillars and rounded window tops.

Put up vertical lattice and plant vines. You can choose hummingbird friendly vines like a trumpet vine and enjoy them dancing from bloom to bloom.

I would go with blinds to keep some of the heat out of the house.. If your looking for plants check with your local landscapers or gardeners they can advice for your area. A lot of them offer free estimates. My step dad did this years ago and then did it himself. After seeing the price for plants then the labor you know why.

I had a similar problem. I bought painter drop cloths, used plumming tubes as rods and used curtain rings with clips. I made simple tie backs and hooked them to the columns. I looked great and soft. You can do the same with sheers sold on ebay.

All great ideas. There are also window application products to shade the sun/heat with protective coatings that may solve your problem as well.
