Love white pumpkins, but want them to be super white? This post is about how to paint real pumpkins for the fall season.
I love white pumpkins, but I wanted them to be very white. The ones I had where more of a yellow and green white so I decided to paint them. I did some research online, but didn't find a lot of information. I found enough to muddle through and went for it!
This is what I started with. A lot of pumpkins, paint and my Poppies paint powder. I knew I needed to use a chalk type paint for adhesion because you can't exactly sand pumpkins to get grip for paint. The first thing I did was wash them with dish soap, water and a rag. I let them completely dry. I then sprayed them with one full coat of a clear paint sealer making sure to get the entire pumpkin. I let that completely dry. This step is crucial for adhesion.

Painted two coats
After they were dry I started painting, one coat was not enough for me so I used two. It turned out beautiful. To paint the gold, I used a craft acrylic paint and mixed in a little of the Poppies Paint Powder. It worked great!
Now you can decorate!! I knew that I wanted three pumpkins to say B O O. To accomplish this I used a gold and white paint marker. I have these on hand for other projects. Then I just winged it. I made a spider, Happy Fall, polka dots and swirls. I love polka dots and swirls! This is the fun part!
Allow your paint to dry for at least two hours before you seal them with a sealer. Not the rule, but these are going in my booth and will be handled by many people so I need to make sure the paint will not pull or flake off. And this is what you end up with. Some really cool things to display for the fall season!
Come check out my blog for all the crazy details. I made some pumpkin blocks and will be posting a how to for those next week!
