Have asters planted in a potted container. Can I leave them out through the Winter season? Or do I have to plant in the ground for them to survive till next Fall?

Thanks @Z :) @Peg it looks like you are in planting hardiness zone of 6b. Many Asters are hardy to that zone, but I don't know which one you have. If you are unsure then leave the in the pots. I would put them in the basement or garage in a sunny window until the foliage drops off and keep an eye on watering them Once they lose their leaves, moisten it every 7-10 days depending on how warm your environment is. You can take them back outside in the spring. Be sure to cut them back mid summer to avoid a tall gangly plant falling over. If you are sure they are a variety that will take your coldest temperatures, I would go ahead and put them in the ground after the blooms are spent. You can cut them back to about 5" to keep them from looking shaggy and worn out.

Thanks Donna, I know my other asters are fine in the ground thru Winter season but didn't know if it was okay to leave one in a container outside or bring in my garage over Winter months till Spring. ?????

I left mine in containers for the past two years and they keep coming back better each year. But I don't live where we get a real hard freeze. So, I guess I was no help after all! )

98% of my plants stay in pots, Asters have lasted thru many winters. It's the hot (90s) dry summers that they don't like. Mums on the other hand do NOT like staying in pots, always put in the ground, can always move them later or put them back in pots.

I live in Green Bay, Wi. I would like to take the plants outside and put them in soil in the garage. the plants are small and something is eating the buds .
