What to do with a popcorn ceiling?

What can you do with popcorn ceiling that has to be removed? What do you put on the ceiling? Any suggestions

I used a spray bottle filled with water and sprayed the ceiling in small sections, let it sit for a little while, then used a wide putty knife and scraped it off. It's time consuming but worth it in the end.

Beware, popcorn ceilings can, and often are asbestos....do not disturb. we were told to paint over with a heavy coat of good paint as the only safe way unless professionally removed with masks, heavy clothing, etc. sorry!

As long as it isn't asbestos, wear a mask, cover everything and work in small sections (as Dcabester said). There is a tool you can purchase at the home improvement stores that will hold a small plastic bag at the end to help catch the falling debris but it is still very messy. Patience is the key.

Agreed with Shari. You need to know when asbestos was banned from your state and add a few more years to be sure. You can always take a sample from your ceiling to a lab and have it analyzed but in most cases, knowing when your house was built and when asbestos was banned should be enough. If you decide to paint over, use a ceiling paint that spreads in one colour then dries white. The missed spots will show better. Also, use a slotted foam roller. When loaded with paint, it covers popcorn ceilings better than any other rollers. If you choose to scrape it off, be aware that there will be scrapes and dings in your ceiling as a result. No big deal to fix them but you need to budget that extra time.

As a former remodeler, My crew and I removed a lot of popcorn ceilings. Time consuming, messy, and costly. Draping plastic on floors and walls. Wetting down the popcorn ( we used vinegar and water). Scraping overhead was backbreaking. cleaning and patching any damage. Then we decided to cover with drywall. Drywall manufacturers came out with 1/4", 4' X 10' sheets of drywall to solve the problem. Less mess, fast installation, less patching than 4' X8' drywall. We would install crown molding in the corners where the ceiling meets the wall. So no patching there.

Haven't tackled the project yet. Will probably do the ceiling tiles but not sure.

I don't know how to do any remodeling with out a mess but we had them in a rent house and we took a rake and smoothed the ceilings before painting and they were nice

We just covered ours with bead board instead of removing them. It was inexpensive and easy - and we love the look!
