We have both upstairs and downstairs rooms that have carpet. We are going to remove the furniture, take out the old carpet and pad ourselves. How can we make this process easier

Before removing the carpet and padding, use a razor knife and cut into the carpet at three foot wide lengths. Once the carpet has its initial cut, raise the carpet so as not to cut into the subfloor. Roll each cut strip and tape with duck tape. Easier to handle and remove. Do the same to the padding.

Word of advice one-room-at a time. Remove and discard the old carpet right away to avoid any mishappenings.(As tripping)

Cut the carpet into smaller strips that can easily be rolled up, tied off and carried outside. https://www.homerepairtutor.com/how-to-remove...

Get a pitch fork and sharper the tines. I use this to remove the staples that hold down the padding. Remove the padding. Use the pitch fork to slide under the stapes and lift up. Can do standing up and remove a few at a time instead of on your knees pulling one a time.

Start upstairs. It will be dusty and you don't want dust falling on a new downstairs carpet!

i just removed our living room carpet before the holidays. First advice is to go to a home improvement store and get a good razor knife to cut the carpet. I started withthe cheap retractable cutter and it broke after the first few cuts. As others have said, cut into 3ft or so wide strips and roll up. I used a flat head screwdriver to remove staples.
