DIY Felt Accent Pillows

Who loves pillows? I sure do! I love the way they really transform a space with their unique style and these fun DIY Felt Accent Pillows that I made for our daughter's room did just that.
Our daughter is a real "girly" girl and loves all things pink, soft, and floral. So when I bought new bedding for her last spring, I decided I'd make some accent pillows to coordinate with the fun floral theme.
I started with some little pillows I found at the thrift store. They weren't exactly pretty, but were just what I was looking for.
Next I gathered a few supplies: 3 colors of bulk felt, cut to 1/2 yard each, a package of multi-colored craft felt, 3 coordinating colors of embroidery floss, and a fun package of brightly-colored buttons. Let's make some envelope pillow covers:
Start by folding the felt over the pillow, allowing a 4-inch overlap, then cut off the excess.
Next, cut out some flower templates from plain paper. Free hand is just fine. These flowers are random and fun and we're not going for perfection here. I cut out three different sizes then used them as patterns to cut out a bunch of flowers from the different colored craft felt. I also cut out some bright green leaves too, which really need no template.
Once the flowers and leaves are cut out, it's time to arrange them on the cover. Do you see those creases there on the cover? They match the area of the pillow so you can make sure your pattern will all fit on the front of the cover once you insert the pillow. Visit the blog for the details on a simple way to do this. Once you're happy with your arrangement, put a bit of craft glue on the back of each piece to hold it in place and allow it to dry.
Next, it's time to add some stitching. I used a variety of stitches to create a fun and random look. The stitching not only holds the pieces down well, but also adds a real finishing look.
Now it's time to stitch it up! Turn the cover wrong side out, trim the edges to 1" from the creases on each side, and sew a 1/2" seam down both sides.
Turn the cover right-side out, push in the pillow - and you're done!
The blue-green pillow got a blue cover with a sprinkling of stacked buttons,
and the little beige pillow got a white cover with 3 flowers, a sprig of leaves, and a stack of 3 buttons right in the middle. I love how these pillows turned out and now...I'm looking for places around my home where I can take this idea and make a few more.
