Easy Customized Spoon Rest

Have you seen all those Sharpie mugs out there? Well, when we decided to do a Sharpie theme for our latest Monthly DIY Challenge, those mugs inspired me to try a similar technique on something else... a spoon rest! I had a lot of trouble finding a spoon rest that met my tastes. I just wanted something simple, but not totally plain. So I decided to try customizing one myself with some text, but you could also use this method to add color, pattern, and other designs. Sharpie offers tons of colors, so your options are endless!
If you're not familiar with our Monthly DIY Challenge, each month my friends and I choose a challenge theme or item, and we each come up with our own creative way to use it. We can make a craft, home decor item, upcycle something, whatever our creative minds desire! It's so much fun, and I would LOVE for you to follow along here!
First, I gathered my supplies. I ordered this white ceramic spoon rest (affiliate), and bought a Sharpie pen and an oil based Sharpie paint marker. Then I used cotton balls to clean the spoon rest with rubbing alcohol before getting started. It's important to remove oils from your fingers as well as any dirt and dust.
After printing my desired text, I used my Sharpie marker to transfer it to the spoon rest. I held the pen in place for a few seconds dotting along the text. This method will allow you transfer ANY font you desire. I just wanted a simple font with a farmhouse style to it.
Next, I traced the dots that were transferred with a fine point oil based Sharpie paint marker in black. You can choose any color you desire! Go slowly and careful so that you don't end up with paint pooling in one spot and creating a mess.
The last step is to cure your project so that it becomes dishwasher safe. I placed my spoon rest in a 250 degree oven for two hours. The goal here is low and slow. Heat on a low setting over a long time period.
And that's it! Probably one of the easiest projects I've ever done! We now have a dishwasher safe spoon rest that fits in perfectly with our kitchen decor. I'm going to place this one on our new coffee bar to avoid sticky mess from the cream and sugar getting all over the counter.
