I own a two-flat that doesn't allow smoking inside but I need to provide a closed (against elements) container to prevent renters from throwing cigarette butts around the porch and yard. Would like it to look nice.

Get a tiny lidded trash can. Look like small versions of the big ones but in colors. The get a gallon plastic milk bottle with a top. Fill the milk bottle with a bit of water . Insert the milk bottle in the trash can. Keeps the smell down. butts inside and when its full toss.

you can take an old steamer pot with steamer insert place it on a stand . Then take sand and baking soda and fill the steamer pot. when it gets full of butts lift the steamer insert and empty dead butts into the garbage. The sand and soda should keep the smell down.
  • To add to Denise's excellent suggestion, you can decorate the steamer pot too. You can also use cheap kitty litter and mix in an extra box of baking soda. Or mix in some essential oil - lavender, pine, rosemary would be good for an outside location. To make it more attractive, add a few low maintence potted plants around the stand. The prettier the place looks the more you can charge for rent. :-)

Decorate a coffee can. Put a little water in it and label it butt can. I used scrap book paper that was on clearance at 10 cents for a package of 5 sheets.
