Giving New Life to the Old

I converted my deck into a room and did not have heat or air vents installed so I left the old window openings open and where the door was I added a French door.

I went to the thrift store and happened to see these pieces of "something or others" for sale for $3. The guys laughed at me...wth...you going to turn your house into a Chinese restaurant? I said I am going to work magic with this. I will show you later.

I also had this rosewood room divider that I purchased about 12 years ago that I never knew what to do with. I been taking it apart and using it around my house here and there.

I went to Lowes and purchased Gatehouse Exterior Shutter Hinges because I wanted to mouth the screen on the door but make it so I can still clean the glass

I cut the panels to fit the openings and glued them in place

I took a screen panel and mounted it on a door leaving the hinges exposed

They open now and I can still clean the glass on both sides...

I only used the latch and screw to keep it closed and mounted a wooden cabinet knob to the screen to open and close the door.

Notice the door and screen match in color that because the door was purchased unfinished and I stained it using polyshades Bombay mahogany (satin) and I went over the screen with it and it gave it new life and now they match

All done!! I love how it came out!!

I don't think this looks like a Chinese restaurant at all!

I couldn't see it at first, but I truly love the way that French door turned out. But, 1. Could you not cut down two more of the panels for the two window openings, so it's cohesive all across the wall? Or 2. Baring that, could you not stain the geometric panels the same color? I really think it's very creative, either way!

I think it looks awesome. I'm just wondering, though - do the French doors no longer close properly or were they just not shut completely before the photo?

we did something similar, when we moved into our brand new home, we found that the master got a lot of morning and noon sun. We were trying to find a way to block some of the sun and maybe make the room a bit cooler. I didn't want to go with shades over the windows, so we decided to go with lattice. My husband cut the lattice to fit each window snugly. We wedged the lattice into each window. We live in west Texas on a hill and get a lot of wind, some of it pretty strong, and the lattice has stayed in the windows. It has lasted over 7 years now and is still going strong. We liked the look so much, that we went around the entire house with the lattice in all the windows. We have a brick house and the lattice gives the house almost an old English look or something. Of course, ours is not as beautiful as yours, but we like it.
