I've seen people take out the guts of them and install a new TV that fits the size of the old screen. You may have to install supports to support the new TV but they looked pretty nice when they got done.

If your in a cold area or just want some ambiance, gut it and put a flat electric infrared heater insert that has a blower and sound effects in it. Put a couple of boards on the side or take a stainable piece of plywood cut it to make a three sections to fit the tv from top to bottom and attach it to sides and top and use decorative trim around the box and speakers to dress it up stain or paint to what you want and plug in the sounds effects of the fire insert for added ambiance. The infrared heater generally have the option of heat or just fire looks they are pretty inexpensive probably around 80.00 to 300.00 and use as a focal point in the main living room, family room or even in a bedroom.

I recently saw someone turn one of those into a really cool fish tank/aquarium. Also if you have kids around, you could gut it and let them put on their own pretend TV show or whatever they imagine it to be-- remember how much fun it was when you randomly had a giant box around? Old TV=bourgeois cardboard box 😊 good luck!

After reading all the comments which were good, I felt that some of those ideas would be a lot of work. For me, I would recycle it, if I couldn't give it away for free on Craigslist.

I would donate to Goodwill. They often have someone who can fix electronics but I am not sure about TVs. Maybe a call to confirm. : )

That makes sense. It would cost too much to repair I suppose. Too bad. Mine started to smoke and I went and got hubby and I said, "You think something is wrong with the TV?" LOL Duh, huh? I just upgraded to a new 50 inch. hehehe Sometimes failure is a good thing. : )

Eww. Take it to recycling. With the money you would spend trying to change it into something else you could get something attractive!

Just be careful there are parts that store charges. Mercury, lithium and other metals and chemicals. I would take it to a dump or better yet let someone else haul it away for you and salvage it for scrap. The dump will break it down and recycle it. Much of it wont make it to the landfill. Even working though these things aren't really worth the time of day. Thats my opinion anyway. Often thought the projector in it could make a cool party light but honestly my advice is scrap it and move on to the next project.

Though suppose you could gut it. And use only the housing. Put a flat screen in front and use the extra space to hide media components, a pc maybe and wires etc... I dunno I still say ita junk but you got me thinking.

We had an old TV that sat on a swivel. It had a pretty oak cabinet (27" TV) that was in perfect condition. Like you, we wanted to recycle it. Hubby carefully pulled the "guts" out and I lined the inside of the cabinet with gold velvet. We then "found" two old shutter cabinet doors that we had stored in the garage "for later use :)" and by gosh if they didn't fit the front of the cabinet perfectly! We used the cabinet as a bar for quite a few years. Then another light flashed on. We needed to buy a couple of small safes to store our important "stuff". Where were we going to put them? Well, I removed the velvet lining inside the cabinet, painted it and both small safe's fit perfectly! Oh, I forgot the back of the cabinet. I just used a thin piece of plywood (cut exactly to fit the back, painted it to match the oak cabinet & screwed it to the back. Works like a charm...and I guarantee, no one will try to steal the safes!

I saw somewhere a man used the glass to make a very cool coffee table . .his was done with a lot of electronics on the underside for his kids though. Not necessary to do the electronics, but might be cool to make a coffee table with some type of lights under the glass that maybe look like stars?

I made my old TV into a side table with doors on front and bought some handle pulls and some magnet closures put some shelves inside and use it for storing some books as well, and the top of the tv will be used for putting a table lamp on and will be placed between two chairs that I am getting from my mother when she moves out of her house after she sells it I am also restaining it a deeper darker color since it is light wood color and my wood is unpainted and all this will have to match since I am adding to it and oh I also gutted the old TV
  • Susan Bechamp Susan Bechamp on Nov 01, 2016
Gut the electronics. Install wooden shelves inside. Paint inside and out, colors of choice. Use it in the garage to hold garden supplies, paints and rollers, brushes...etc. small bins will help keep it organized. Pallet wood can be nailed to the back. If you want doors you might be able to make your own or find some at a thrift store or RE store. This would be a good project to test out a ( new to you) paint technique you've not experimented with yet. Challenge yourself and have fun with it.
