I'm one to capitalize on existing conditions. If I had an area where nothing would grow (a rarity in Fla.), I'd create a patio/gathering area, inclusive of a fire pit. Greenery could be achieved through potted plants, and I'd never have to worry with weed or grass removal...........a dream come true!

Nice thought there too, Becky! I was trying to be "frugal" with that bed ... Shared some of my old and trusty and many times divided hostas with the spot, split some echinacea and what not - so I was bummed to have killed off so many typically hardy (maybe even considered native) plants. And this is weird and your gonna think "ok, sure - you are just a pain" BUT! Even potted plants don't do well here - this tree has some weird stuff it sheds all the time making a mess and flying into pots. Now! I did have some short lived lucked with pansies in a pot here this summer in that area! And I am also trying to "hide" the hideous and long ago dinged up aluminum siding on that side of the garage. If I had a sitting area there I would go bananas staring at all the disastrous issues w the siding. The old lady that lived here before must have mowed right over those walnuts and used the garage as her target ;)
