Main Disadvantage of Homemade Chalk Paint
Although it's less expensive than Annie Sloan and other commercial chalk paints, homemade chalk paint has its disadvantages. As you can see in my pictures below, it leaves white specs on the piece, even after sanding to a smooth finish. Those specs come from the Plaster of Paris that I use to convert latex paint to chalk paint. Sometimes I love that texture... other times I don't. Although it's super convenient to grab any can of latex paint from my supply and convert it, I have to say that Annie Sloan and other commercial chalk are better.
The top was sanded and finished with two coats of Annie Sloan Dark Wax.
Painting a cool color on top of a warm wood makes for a lovely contrast after distressing is done.

Diane, never had any trouble with white specks but if you use corn starch, what is the ratio of cornstarch, water and paint?

Wal-Mart, Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, Lowes, and Menards carry CHALK PAINT. The quality is not the same as Annie Sloan's, but they do the job. The price is affordable, and the paint goes a long way. Lowes sells Valspar Chalk Paint, Sealing Wax and the Dark (Antiquing) Wax.
