A New Use for Silver Platters From the Thrift Store

3 Materials
Once I figured out how easy chalkboard paint was to use, and how great of a chalkboard finish it creates, I haven't stopped experimenting with different surfaces to make into chalkboards! I'm using these silver platter chalkboards on our Thanksgiving table this year. (Please visit the link at the bottom to view the complete post. Thanks!)
I picked up these platters at the thrift store. I see them all the time when I make a trip, but I often try to wait to find the ones with that vintage patina, or those that just have a cool shape.
I tried a couple of different kinds of chalkboard paint, and I will always recommend the brush-on type. I've found the blackboard paint in a spray can to be difficult to write on and really difficult to wipe the chalk off of the surface. I've even used the brush-on chalkboard paint on glass. After three coats, it works as a great chalkboard! (Old windows and picture frames make great bases for chalkboards.)
After brushing three coats of paint on the platter, I let it dry and then rubbed the side of the chalk over the entire surface to "season" the chalkboard. All of the place settings at our table have a place to write something each person is thankful for. I've also used these little chalkboards for price signs at a vintage market I sell at, and you'll also see them in different holiday vignettes in my home with short quotes or words.
I used a large silver platter with chalkboard paint to make my wreath for this fall, too. You can see it here: Silver Platter Fall Wreath
Even if you don't have perfect handwriting, you can make your lettering on a chalkboard look like a professional's - all you need is a printer. Here is the complete tutorial: Easy Chalkboard Lettering
