Your diamond in the rough! Set a budget, (maybe double it). Then go to look at backyard slope makeovers online. There are so many great examples. (I love water features). But knowing your budget is the key to helping you.

I had a backyard that was worse than this and it is beautiful now. I could n ot landscape it all in one year so I picked a small area and landscaped it and in the areas I put flower seeds in the area. I went to Lowes regularly to buy discounted plants. Check out the Master Gardening Program in her area through the extention services of your state. They have many vlounteers to help you. Also, contact a close university program for landscape design and ask for help. You have a wonderful opportunity to create your own palet.

I suggest removing 3-4 of those shade trees and then plant a small orchard, especially 2 Apricot trees of different types, 3-4 peach trees, at least 1 nut tree ( in a spot that you want shade), and at least 3 rows of Raspberries and 3 rows of another type berry. All the fruit/nuts listed are expensive to buy and fairly easy to grow. Add a small garden in a spot that gets all day sun. And plant a lot of 'cutting' type flowers all over and a 'Baby's Breath' flowering bush to get cuttings to go with any flower in a vase. Don't build a deck as those add to your property tax in most areas...but do make a patio of cement or stone (which will not add to your taxes). Put it under or near your nut tree.

you will need a full plan and then put into place a section at a time assuming money is not unlimited. I suggest , getting a landscaper in to give professional suggests. I suggest hardscape, of retaining walls, / water fall, with stream, perhaps a small patio and then a few steps down another terrace. so you have several "rooms " or areas to enjoy . a long term project

Would help to know total dimension and how much higher in feet the very back is.

Under the trees you could make a deck or patio, so don't rip them out yet

Agreed to above statement. Start with one area; improve soil; use the terrace stones to "support" the different levels. Check your area for garden clubs for plants - plant perennials for your area. DO PLANT RESEARCH to avoid invasive plants. Have fun!!! Do a three year plan. :0)

You might want to look at keyhole gardening, on hills you can make one end deeper with key portion facing a path. It kind of looks like what may have been there before, hard to tell from just one image.

Multi terrace it. You could have different zones on different terraces. Lots of work, but it could be really lovely. Barbecue area, gazebo area, arbors, flower area, grass area, etc.

Not sure where your daughter lives but if it is an area that gets much rain, (it looks very green) it would be wise to check with a drainage expert. Too much water coming down that hill might affect the integrity of the foundation.

Looks like she is on a bluff like I am. The only solution is terracing the hill. Make sure whoever does it, that you allow good drainage by the walls or you will end up with holes opening up when you get a heavy rain. Walls and large stone steps from one level to another. Good luck!!!!!

Your daughter should get a landscape architect to help her. If there are heavy rains, her home could be flooded. If not done properly, that will surely happen and be devastating. I would suggest she also sign up for flood insurance immediately, just in case. There's a certain amount of time before a flood that you must have the insurance in order that it pay off. After she has the problem corrected, she can cancel it if she wants.

If you have the funds I would go with rock garden and water fall from top to bottom with water pump to return to top

These are great ideas. A part of the rock garden could have some ground cover and perhaps some wild flowers, depending on the light levels. The waterfall is a wonderful idea. Perhaps put a small pond at the bottom with water lilies. It has great potential.

I agree with Nancy...water garden and rock garden!
