Address the cords first--- hide as best you can, then stack them and be sure the "eye", the part that needs to be seen or to "see" your emotes, is out, but everything else should be hidden or covered with some fabric, swathed around it like food is swathed with fair or tablecloths, on a nice buffet. Then either paint a lighter version of your favorite color you have used in the room, onto the back and sides of the shelves. OR, get the removeable paper and wallpaper the back of the shelves, OR get fabric that coordinates with your room, cover thickish cardboard, cut to size, with the fabric and stick it into the back of the shelf. I did this in my son's camping room, with a different flannel plaid on each shelf. It truly has a lumberjack feel, but if we get sick of it, we just pull out the fabric colored cardboard and toss it! I used some of the same fabric to cover a bulletin board and make a pillow. It looks cool, for a kid named Coleman! Anyway, take some velvet or fabric in a great color and hot glue it as trim on the lampshade. COLOR needs to happen here. :)

Great idea!! (: everything that's currently on the shelves is going to be gone it's just sitting there to get out of the way! Including the junk on the bottom shelf which I think the trash will receive. I def will be doing the cardboard fabric I love the idea! Thanks again!

@Ronny Schwartz this is a great space to freshen up. I think K. C is right about losing the wires, but it you are clearing that shelf in particular, your battle is half over. You say you are going to get rid of most things on the shelf, you may want to rethink some of those pieces. The candle holders are really very interesting, and may look different if the background is different. @mt just posted a dresser where she used beadboard paper on the back and painted in - http://www.hometalk.com/diy/-2442897 - it looks great. If you don't like the colour or the candle holders, consider painting them, you could contrast the indentation portion with the rest of the square. You could possibly use these candle holders as bookends, with some handy reading material in between. Your sculpture is also interesting as is but if you are tired of it, you could also paint this. I always shop the clearance areas of places like homesense and target for unusual pieces, not always meant for how I use them, or I will paint them if the colour isn't right. Thanks for posting and have fun doing this project. Do update with pics.
  • I have built in shelves on each side of my fireplace which I cut down the bottom half to 14" deep (still have to make doors) and I mixed my own paint samples from Home Depot and came up with this teal color for $1 for the back. I do love mixing things up and displaying what I love (because the vases and knick knacks were gifts from kids or hubby). I drilled holes for the cords and still have some tweaking to do. The fake fire logs are electric and just got them on clearance for $11 at HD so I still have to drill holes for the cord.

I drilled a hole in the back corner of the shelf..ran the cords down to outlet. then put a table or cupboard below the shelves to hide the cords. then paint the interior of the shelves a matching color of something else in the room.cheri

perhaps some books ..some standing upright..some stacked flat on top of each other. perhaps a cascading silk green plant to give it some warmth. needs something of a larger scale on one of the shelves..even a large bowl from your kitchen..or a box always adds warmth or color..cheri
  • Perhaps you can start by declutting the shelves. Then Add small plants (1 to 2), disperse the decorative items throughout the shelving by placing 1 or 2 per shelf and use bright colors. Additing a few books and hiding the electric codes, will enhance the look. If the selving do not allow to hide the cables from the back, you can easely drill a smal opening to pass the cable thru the back. One additiona option is to paint the background black, this will provide depth perseption to the selving or just leave as is. Remember color can be changed easely. Share pictures once you have updated the look. Good luck!

You could either paint or wallpaper the backs of the shelves in a color/pattern that relates to the rest of the room. You could also do picture frames, books, objects. I would recommend looking on Pinterest under "shelf styling" or something along those lines to seek inspiration images. For clients, we usually purchase art books, fashion books, design books etc... Typically because they are very visually appealing both on the covers and the spines. Other books that cater to your interests are even better since they are more meaningful to you. There are usually great books that can be found at used book stores for very reasonable prices. Here in NYC some places sell used books by the yard! Additionally we style them so that some are vertical with the spines facing outwards, others are stacked horizontally. Others style books based on color. Since there are several shelves, maybe one set of shelves could be used as storage, but be sure to measure and get the appropriate sized boxes/baskets so that they fit depth wise, height wise, and width wise. I would go more decorative (i.e. baskets, colored boxes with metal handles versus plastic storage boxes). Additionally, I would get uniform boxes/baskets it looks better when they are all the same. In general, for decorative purposes, I would prioritize size and color for the items you are choosing for this.

If your getting rid of the electronics that will help with the jumble. Some more bright pottery would look good plus some interesting reading material. Can you put in indirect lighting? Since it seems to be a dark space and you add the lighting you could paint it a dramatic dark color to show off the pottery and sculptures.

I think this would make a great little reading nook. I'd paint the outside trim and shelves black. Paint the inside red and add lots of books on the lower shelves. Perhaps a plant above hanging down. Add a few other favorite vases or collectibles to balance the look. You could also hang a picture from one of the shelves in front of the books, a gold frame would pop when the lamp is on. Comfy chair to complete your area.

I like the idea of hiding cords, a small hole in the corners allows the cords that must be there to slip quietly down the back. some short rope lighting in the back bottom of the shelf is a huge plus in dark corners and I like greenery and then pottery and memorabilia, books and photos in pretty frames. A light color on the back wall of the shelf gives a nice touch but my suggestion would be to keep it simple and neutral as I wouldn't want it to be my focal point. Shelves like this are a nice place to display your proud pieces and history.

remove wooden shelves, add solid mirror to back, add thick glass shelves set on silver pegs that are stuck into the sides four holes per shelf, two on each side. Then decorate shelves with mirror like frames with black and white pictures, on a few of the shelves. Also, have black glass vases of different shapes and sizes, with either red blooms, or silver and red blooms or leaves extending from bases, plus a few shorter objects, like black or mirrored shapes, like spear, triangular, square, rectangular (place to show a bit of height).

do you have a grouping of "favorite things" a collection of some sort?? My mother collected bells from all over the US.. they would look good in a shelf like this.. I collect elephants... perhaps photos in frames mixed with gifts/keepsakes from the people in the photos. a variety of possibilities but a space for that which is special..Also possibly change the background color to be different from the wall color to make what you display on the shelves stand out...

paint the back wall of the cubby with coordinating color paint (inexpensive "oops paint" can be found where paint is sold), that will set off the white shelves and trim. Get creative hiding the electronics and cords. Put them in baskets or cover the bottom two shelves with a picture attached with folding hinges. Paint the cords the color of the walls.

Why not add some decorative molding to the shelves?
