Pruning Your Clematis for Top to Bottom Blooms

Is your Clematis beautiful at top but bare at the base? Here is the easy fix for that without losing all of this coming Summers flowers!
This is not the typical tip pruning done in Late winter, early Spring. No matter which pruning group it is in this technique will work to renovate your clematis.
Especially around the base. I have 5 or 6 good size canes on the base of mine and I cut them in different increments from top to bottom.
The top I trim back all canes by 1/3, I eyeballed it and used the base of my landing as my cut off point.
2 of the canes I leave alone from here on out, the remaining 4 canes I cut in incremental lengths. One I cut off at the base (this will encourage new growth from there), the next I cut at 12 inches, then I cut one at 3 feet.
I know it looks like a patch of dirt but it will become more clematis by next Spring.

I have two and they get beautiful blooms on top, but almost non the length of the plant. These are great tips. I had no idea about burying a cane to root it. Thanks for the share.

Made me remember the time my brother cleaned the weeds growing on the corner of my mom's house. It was a 20 year old clematis!! She was heartsick!!

I know the feeling. My hubby was helping me weed one year and he yanked this clematis out of the ground just as I was warning him to be careful, I had noted he was a little to aggressive just seconds before it went flying in the air towards the wheel barrow. I quickly ran over and replanted it and dismissed him from weeding with me anymore that day. :) He hates working in the yard anyways so he was happy to go.
