DIY Farmhouse Style Coasters

7 Materials
Now that the holidays are upon us, I am constantly searching for all types of gifts for friends, neighbors, teachers, and anyone else I am forgetting about right now. I recently wrote about 10 great hostess gifts under $10, but sometimes I like to get a little crafty and make something myself. These easy farmhouse style coasters are perfect for those times.
I found these natural stone tiles that were less than $4 for a pack of 9 at the hardware store. They are not a completely smooth surface, but I think that adds to their charm, and they were the perfect size for coasters. I spray painted the tiles with a primer and then black paint and allowed them to dry.
I then used my Silhouette cutter (affl. link) to cut my designs out of contact paper. All of the designs I used are available to download for free on my blog that is listed at the bottom of these instructions. The design was applied to the top of the tiles, and I used white acrylic paint to paint it. If you don't have a Silhouette cutter, there are tons of great small stencils available online and at the craft stores. Once the paint for the stencil dried, I removed the contact paper and coated the top and sides of each tile in 3 coats of matte ModPodge to seal it. I also applied felt pads on the bottom of each tile so that the coasters would not scratch my surfaces.
Can you picture a stack of these coasters tied up with some twine ready to give as a gift? I love them so much that I kept a set for myself, but it's so easy to make several sets at one time to give out to teachers or neighbors, or anyone that pops by unexpectedly at the holidays.
