I love adding a fun ornament or two (or ten!) every year to our collection, and now that our kids are getting older they want to add some of their own, too.

This easy DIY melted snowman ornament was a perfect project to do with them, and they're so excited to hang it on our tree this year. It's pretty much impossible to mess up. My 5 year old thought it was the funniest idea in the world.

Let's get crafting some DIY Christmas ornaments:

Tools and materials:

  • An ornament (it can be plastic or glass, but since I was doing this with kids, I chose plastic)
  • Rock salt
  • Sticks or twigs
  • Peppercorns
  • Orange and red felt
Adding ingredients to the empty ornament

1. Add Salt

You're basically just adding all the ingredients to an empty ornament.

Filling the clear ornament with salt

I used a rough salt like rock salt or kosher salt, but feel free to use table salt if that's all you have. You just need a white substance to represent melted snow.

Adding the arms

2. Add the arms

I went outside and found two little sticks the perfect size to be the arms of my snowman and added them in. Next time I make one I'm going to really look for sticks that split at the end like real snowman arms.

Adding the eyes and buttons

3. Add the eyes and buttons

I used five little peppercorns to represent eyes and buttons on my snowman.

Adding the carrot and scarf

4. Add a carrot and scarf

I cut a small triangle out of orange felt to look like a mini carrot nose. Then I cut out a long thin rectangle out of red felt and then cut little fringes on the edge so it looked like a fun little scarf. I wish I had a little black hat and corncob pipe, but this thing still looks adorable.

It looks so cute, my daughter just keeps shaking it up so she can see all the different ways the snowman can turn out.

We placed it on a mini tree in our entranceway so my daughter can point it out to guests as soon as they come in. We might move it to our big tree before the holiday, or we might just leave it here.
