Color for inside walls of fireplace - what do you think?

Our fireplace is no longer used. The interior fireplace walls are currently painted burgundy. The firewood is lighted by a small light. We are wondering if the interior fireplace walls should be painted a light color like white?

What is your opinion?

Personally I like that color in the fireplace.

I also like the color! The firebox and mantel are the focal point. They blend in nicely. Painting it a lighter color, it would be lost.

don't paint it -buy or make a 3 sided screen - embellish as much as you wisha and place it inside. Since you are not using the fireplace there is no reason you cannot switch out the colors or whatever you use on the decoration. Easier to paint and mount a 3 sided hinged piece of plywood with command strips than being stuck with layers of paint.

I agree. If you want to change color go with another dark one but try this first. Extend the color to the outside. Like a frame around the box. You may even be able to go with a metalic, a dark gold, black. Since you have a grate filled with wood why not have a poker or other tools beside the opening.

I really changed what was my fireplace by removing the insert, capping the gas line and removing the chimney which had caused damage by forming an ice dam on the roof. A contractor did all of this and then built a box where the insert had been. An electrician provided power mounted up above where the insert would have been. I now have a 36 gallon bow front aquarium in the opening and love it! I designed the space between the aquarium and mantle to have cabinet doors which gives me access to the aquarium to feed the fish and any maintenance needed.

We have bought and sold houses all over the country during my husband's 20 year Air Force career. This house is our last and we are doing things we like and want! Resale will be by our children when we are not on this earth. The fireplace insert if stored in the basement. The gas line is capped. Removing the chimney was necessary as it had caused an ice dam and a leaky roof.

  • I wrapped christmas lights around my wood. It makes such a wonderful glow. I would try that before you paint and see if it brightens it more than just the light you said was there. Enjoy!

I used embossed tin on the three inside surfaces, painted black but distressed on all the high points (bringing it up to silver) and remove some of that wood. Too many logs will distract from the effect.

I think I would cover the inside bricks with coppery tin ceiling tiles. It's not hard to do. Use the real tin tiles and not the vinyl ones they sell at the big box stores. I buy from American Tin Ceilings and like the Artisan Tiles. They are 2ft x 2ft, can be cut to size with tin snips, and attached to your bricks with construction adhesive/Liquid Nails. They are subtly glossy and will reflect your light, but give great detail in small spaces. The hardest part is picking the tile style and color! There are so many options. www.americantinceilings.com BTW, I do not work for them, but I did my kitchen backsplash and my bathroom ceilings using their tile. I love it. The tiles are not cheap, but the look is fantastic and it can easily be done by yourself!

HOME DEPOT HAS LARGE 18X18? DIFFERENT STYLE HARD PLASTIC TILES (USED FOR CEILINGS OR BACKSPLASHES SOMETIMES) THAT CAN BE CUT TO SIZE FOR THE INSIDE OFYOUR FIREPLACE.I USED THESE WHEN I RENOVATED A 1954 RANCH AND THEY LOOK GREAT!

I would line the fire box with mirrors, then do an arrangement of candles in it. All sizes, some on stands, some on the floor. A nice worm glow, and nice to look at. Change out the candles for the seasons.

Love the space you have to work with : ) ....how about metal tiles like they use for tin ceilings and backsplashes ....copper perhaps? .. instead of painting ?

I like it the way it is. If you want a change of décor, how about a fireplace screen? There are some really splendid ones out there, or make your own if you are up to it. Since you won't be lighting a fire it doesn't NEED to be fire safe. (My neighbor turned his non-functional fireplace into an indoor fountain. It also adds humidity to the room).

The color will stay as is now. We took down the mantel, lowered the painting and installed a new recessed light. Within eight hours the light malfunctioned so we are back to square one. Thanks for your help.

I purchased item V34332 duraflame candelabra heater from QVC recently because I usually keep candles in my fireplace. The heater has 12 led candles that flicker or stay solid plus you have the added feature of turning on the heater. I just purchased one for my daughter's home because I just love how it brightens up the empty space even during the day even when the candles are not on. Check it out if it's in your budget rather than changing the painted interior.
