I would love to have fresh herbs in my apartment, but...

Do you have enough light in you place?Are there big enough window sills?

most herbs are really hardy I grow them all year round in Tasmania which get's pretty cold in winter I also did the same in NZ. Most herbs will grow very well in pots in fact most should be grown in pots as they tend to take over the garden. Basil does really well in pots all mints, parsley's, you can even grow things like dill, fennel in pots In NZ I had a glass door wasn't insulated that I had them all in pots in front of as we didn't use the door for entry of house. The big thing is to not let them dry out as all plants dry out faster in pots as they don't have much soil. If you have shelves in your bathroom that is a good place to grow mints as they like the moist air. You will need to add fertiliser once a month to keep them growning and keep them all tip pruned to stop them going to seed

You could use a tension rod (like the kind normally used for a shower curtain) to hang herb pots from. It could go between the kitchen window frame or between two cabinets on each side of the window. (Hard to suggest exactly where without knowing the layout.) There is a slideshow here on Hometalk that I've seen that shows ideas for using tension rods.

I used command hooks, which don't damage a wall to hang a small herb garden in my kitchen.

If you have a window sill in your kitchen you could grow them there.

You could take a piece of PVC maybe a 6 inch round and have holes cut in it. Add ends. Fill with dirt. Each hole could have a different herb. You could either hang them using the tension rod idea or make a vertical stand that they could hang from or sit on whichever you prefer. and have several. You could paint them to match your decor before you fill them with dirt

Light height adjusts as plants grow taller. Can put anywhere because you don't rely on window light.

Do you have a picture of something similar? I'm having a hard time visualizing this. It seems that you would need more soil than what would be in a 6" PVC.

One of those shoe racks with pockets can hold lots of small plants and it hangs over a door. Check out your door situation, but be sure you have the light for the plant. Use pots of cut off the tops large plastic soda bottles.

Might make your shower a little crowded, but if you have a window in your bathroom, then you can hang a cloth shoe storage tree onto the back of your bathroom door. Place two small pots into each slot where each shoe would go, the bottom pot needs to be sealed, then place a small amount of gravel in the bottom and then a slightly smaller top pot with soil and a small herb plant into it. Do that for each shoe slot. The small pot will keep the herbs from growing too big and you'll have a little garden that will work nicely. If the door hanging won't work, then hang it on your shower curtain rod or over the glass tub/shower door. If you do that, then the water and steam from your shower will help keep your herbs healthy. I have a couple of aero gardens that can grow not only herbs, but flowers and some vegetables. They are no longer as expensive as when they were first introduced. The herbs grow exceedingly well and are so prolific, I often give them away. Seed kits offer many options. I would highly recommend for your situation as a renter as the location of the garden is very much a matter only of your choice, as lighting is included, so it can be placed wherever it pleases you, and there would be no damage to walls, Windows sills, etc. Pulse it is portable and be moved room to room and taken with you should you move.

If they are light weight, you can hang them on the walls, or even window, with "command strips" which will NOT harm walls or even paint.

You can also use a tension rod, and hang some wire baskets that you can put pots or jars for herbs...right on. Your window in the kitchen where you need them.

or do the glass bulb..small at everythings a dollar store ...tension rod window string to hang.....should not be too heavy ...make sure tension is tight ..you just put dirt in bulb and small plant water...viola!

I saw a Pinterest idea..qt mason jars attached in a row to a board with pipe clamps. Be sure to put drainage stones or peanuts in the bottom inch of the jars. Place it where you do have sunlight.
