Making an attic walkup but not with pull down stairs

We have a huge attic, that you have to crawl into, how do you make it a walk-in (door) but not with the pull down stairs! Those won't work!

I don't know if/ how you could, because even if you built a staircase, the ceiling would be too low for a door. If anyone finds a way, please!!!!post pix!!!We never use our attic, even though it would be a good use of space, but the only trap door to crawl into it is in the garage...

If you do build a staircase you'd have to build an entrance area at the stop of the stairs to allow for a door. Or you could do a door at the bottom of the stairs and build a half wall or railing. http://blog.homespothq.com/2013/11/organized-cold-food-storage/

We have a pull down door. I love it because it is sealed very well to keep the cold out.

I had the same situation and put in a Spiral Staircase that I got for free. It came with no directions or nuts and bolts, but I was able to go online and found great directions. In fact tho, it turned out much easier than you would think. I also went to see one already set up and that was the most helpful. You need to plan the foot steps so that you land in the middle of the room (Tallest point up there)..Privacy is not an issue for me so I didnt need a door, but in considering it, I feel like a couple sheets hanging across upstairs would be the easiest option. It gave me a large sewing room and and a small guest area with a double bed. I hired a carpenter to open up the ceiling to fit the stairs, in a corner of the living room. Since the opening is too small to take furniture up I took apart a water bed frame with a bunch of drawers and stretched them out along the back wall. Wonderful storage. Just needed top boards. I invested in a high good quality double size air bed that was wicked comfy. I insulated it all, built more shelving for the craft room area and installed work lights down the center overhead since the only windows are at the ends...Too much info???? LOL. I have seen other ways to make steps in small room situations, and if your interested I can try to show you pictures or actually, google it. Lots of ideas... Sara

we have to access our attic from outside on a roof. I would love to have the walk up stairs if I had any room...when they put in our heating unit I had no idea they blocked off the only access from the back of the attic to the front! So when we remodeled we had to punch a hole through our kitchen roof just big enough for a thing man to climb up into our front huge space of attic! Wish they would have put the heater in the front end instead of just being lazy and blocking off our access! our only hallway is behind the blockage!

Hire a professional! Otherwise, you could be in a mess! With something like this, it is either expensive or more expensive....depending on how much you damage your house! You have weight bearing issues at play here! Those pull down stairs are narrow because they fit between the joist....if you go to the trouble, expense & sacrificing of inside space of putting in a staircase, it is going o be wider than "between the joist".
